Savannah Technical College is seeking a 12-month, full time Health Science Core Department Head/ Instructor to perform instructional duties and supervise all aspects of the Health Science Core curriculum. The position will provide theory and practical instruction to a level sufficient for students to develop the skills necessary to progress into a post-secondary Health Science program or become employed in their chosen Health Science profession. This role also requires the supervision of students during patient care. Responsibilities may be based at either the Savannah or Liberty Campus, but will require travel to any Savannah Technical College Campus location.

Characteristic duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

·        Under general supervision, demonstrates the use of appropriate teaching techniques.

·        Demonstrates the use of appropriate testing and grading procedures, including proper maintenance of grade books and any other appropriate record-keeping required.

·        Demonstrates the effective use of oral and written communication skills.

·        Demonstrates knowledge of current procedures in Health Care fields.

·        Follows approved course syllabus.

·        Monitors students’ use of supplies, materials, and equipment;

·        Develop, manage, and teach classes, delivering instruction both individually and as a member of a team;

·        Prepares lesson plans for classroom instruction for Health Science Core occupational courses;

·        Develop and coordinate curriculum; conduct assessments of all courses taught in the department as requested;

·        Evaluate effectiveness of courses through student data, graduate surveys, and employer surveys;

·        Develop yearly department budget;

·        Complete reports and requests for information from internal and external departments and agencies;

·        Lead and coordinate Health Sciences advisory committee for the department;

·        Participate in College committees and meetings;

·        Collaborate with colleagues on common curriculum areas;

·        Instruct students, develop program syllabi, goals, and objectives;

·        Facilitate student activities for Health Sciences club;

·        Assists with student recruitment, retention, and job placement efforts;

·        Manage department faculty teaching schedules;

·        Order and maintain equipment and supplies;

·        Advise and register health sciences students;

·        Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by attending staff development training, workshops, seminars and conferences;

·        Follows policies and procedures of Savannah Technical College, to include standards for student-faculty professional relationships/interaction;

·        Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

·        Must possess a minimum of an Associate’s Degree in a Health Care related field.

·        Current, unencumbered state of Georgia license (LPN, RN, or EMT/Paramedic) or national certification (Phlebotomy or Medical Assisting) in at least one of the following STC Health Care division majors – Phlebotomy, Medical Assisting, Practical Nursing, Nursing (RN), or EMT/ Paramedic.

Preferred Qualifications (In addition to Minimum Qualifications):

·        Bachelor’s Degree in a Health Care related field from an accredited institution.

·        Three years occupational experience in the field of the program being taught, of which at least one year shall be within the last five years.

·        Availability to teach day or evening classes.

·        Current AHA Instructor certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid.

·        Experience with phlebotomy procedures.

·        Experience teaching in postsecondary education.

·        Experience utilizing a Learning Management System {LMS); experience with the Blackboard LMS platform.

·        Experience in the development, administration, and evaluation of academic programs, to include curriculum development, instructional methodology, planning, evaluation, budgeting, supervision, and management.

Physical Demands

Teaching responsibilities are typically performed in a classroom/lab environment with the employee intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling for three (3) – four (4) continuous hours at a time.  The employee frequently lifts/carries objects that weigh 10lbs. or less.  Clinical responsibilities are typically performed in a hospital, long term care facility, or other medical facilities and require that the employee stand/or walk for seven (7) – eight (8) hours: bend, twist, push/and or pull for three (3) – four (4) hours; and occasionally lift 50lbs. to 75lbs. per rotation.   The exposure to infectious diseases, gas, or fumes is possible during clinical rotations.
