Are you ready to help shape the future of how people move? Curious about transportation innovation, safety, engineering, sustainability, or public policy? The Department of Transportation is looking for motivated, forward-thinking interns to join our mission of keeping our communities connected and our transportation systems moving safely and efficiently.

JOB SUMMARY

The Environmental Internship Program is a full-time summer internship opportunity with the Georgia Department of Transportation. This program provides students with collaborative and innovative learning experiences that complement their academic curriculum. Interns will expand and strengthen their professional background by building workplace relationships, learning new tools, and gaining hands-on experience in Environmental Services.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Environmental Services Intern will work alongside professional staff within the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Office of Environmental Services. Interns will be assigned to one of three primary program areas—Air, Noise, and Environmental Analysis; Cultural Resources; or Ecology—while gaining foundational knowledge and exposure to each section’s role in the environmental review process for transportation projects.

Under the guidance of an assigned mentor, the intern will gain hands-on experience supporting environmental compliance and project coordination activities. This internship provides an opportunity to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment while learning how environmental considerations are integrated into transportation planning and development.

Key responsibilities may include:

• Assisting staff with field work and environmental data collection

• Supporting the preparation and review of documentation required for compliance with federal and state environmental regulations

• Participating in interagency coordination meetings with federal, state, and local partners

• Conducting research and analysis related to environmental impacts and regulatory requirements

• Assisting with project documentation, reporting, and record keeping

• Observing and learning the processes involved in environmental planning, analysis, and project development

Through this experience, interns will develop practical knowledge of environmental review procedures, regulatory coordination, and the role environmental specialists play in delivering transportation projects.
