Shift:  8am - 5pm

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, it provides barbering services such as cutting, trimming, shampooing, styling hair, or giving shaves. May also provide additional hair care services such as scalp treatments, relaxers, and other similar treatments.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Shampoo, cut, and style hair. Apply scalp treatment, if appropriate. Apply permanents, relaxers, conditioners, and/or other similar treatments.

  • Trims mustaches and beards, and nose, ears, and eyebrow hair as needed.
  • Cuts, shampoos, set combs out, and styles hair.
  • Identifies and treats hair problem(s) accordingly
  • Apply scalp treatments as prescribed by physicians.
  • Apply permanents, relaxers, conditioners, hair coloring, etc. as appropriate.
  • Consult with staff and residents regarding appropriate hair care.
  • Calls nurse or other staffs attention to sores or rashes about the face or head.
  • Inspects patient's scalp for head lice and treats them appropriately.

Maintain a clean and orderly beauty shop and hair-cutting area.

  • Maintain instruments in safe working conditions including cleaning oiling, and sterilizing as necessary.
  • Maintain an adequate supple of clean linens.
  • Stores soiled linens awaiting pick-up appropriately.
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies that are needed for planned treatments.
  • Maintain a clean shop, such as sweeping and cleaning up hair after each patient is finished.
  • Clean mirrors, shampoo bowls, chairs, and keep supply cabinets clean and orderly.

Schedule appointments and maintain records.

  • Maintains accurate account of services performed to whom and the number of supplies issued.       
  • Schedules appointments by phone and maintains an accurate calendar of appointments.
  • Provide services in a cosmetology shop or living quarters when clients are not able to come to the shop.

         Provide services based on the unique needs of the residents.

  • Perform services for and demonstrate flexibility with clients who are confined to stretchers or wheelchairs.
  • Provide services for and appropriately handle clients who are behaviorally disabled and may kick, bite, hit, throw things, and jerk their heads.

May provide training following the Work/Training Program.

  • Provide training to residents in various beauty shop duties as part of the Vocational Program.
  • Teach grooming, dress/fashion, and make-up classes to clients whose treatment plans reflect this goal.

May give complete manicures, including filing nails, grooming cuticles, and nail polish application.

  • Cut nails without injuring patients.
  • File nails safely, efficiently, without rough edges, and in  a becoming manner.
  • Groom cuticles and apply nail polish, based coat, etc. as appropriate.
  • Assures polish colors chosen are attractive.  Applies polish neatly and efficiently.
  • Repair injured nails, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

One (1) year of job-related experience providing barbering/cosmetician services to groups of special needs individuals in a human service setting

1.     Must pass a pre-employment background check (which includes criminal records check, driver's history, and verification of work history) and a post-hire federal background investigation.

2.     Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test and will be placed in the pool for the State Random Drug Testing Program.

3.     Eligible to work in the U.S.

4.     Able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

 **High School and College Degrees Must Be From an Accredited Institution** 

Associate's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university OR One year of experience providing social or direct care services to groups of special needs individuals in a human services setting OR One year of experience at the lower level Client Support Worker 1 (SSS010) or position equivalent. Note: Some positions may require a valid driver's license.
