Position Summary
Under the general supervision of school leadership, the Special Education Teacher is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating instructional programs for students with disabilities. This role ensures that students have access to the general education curriculum to the maximum extent possible, with the support of individualized instruction, accommodations, and behavioral strategies in alignment with each student's IEP (Individualized Education Program).
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide both direct and indirect instructional support in a structured, positive learning environment.
- Use multi-sensory and differentiated instruction strategies tailored to individual student needs.
- Develop and implement IEPs in collaboration with parents, specialists, and administrators.
- Modify general education curriculum as needed to align with students’ individualized goals.
- Teach functional academic, social, and life skills aligned with IEP objectives.
- Collect and document student progress toward IEP goals and complete SWD progress monitoring.
- Maintain accurate eligibility and annual review logs; submit timely reports.
- Conduct eligibility assessments and support new SWD enrollments per DJJ policy.
- Maintain organized and timely records in compliance with federal, state, and agency requirements (e.g., IDEA, FERPA, DJJ standards).
- Provide training and consultation to staff regarding behavioral and instructional interventions.
- Serve as part of the multidisciplinary team, collaborating to support student progress.
- Assist in preparing data and documentation for state, local, and federal reporting.
- Maintain classroom discipline and implement school-wide behavior support models (e.g., PBIS).
- Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and accreditation efforts.
- Support crisis intervention efforts and behavioral de-escalation strategies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by school leadership.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an approved special education program or completion of a major in special education (general curriculum).
- Must hold or be eligible for a valid Georgia Clear Renewable Teaching Certificate in Special Education.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in special education is preferred.
- Experience working with students in a correctional, behavioral health, or alternative education setting is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of:
- Evidence-based instructional strategies and positive behavioral supports
- Georgia DJJ curriculum, assessment practices, and intervention protocols
- Special education laws, compliance requirements, and IEP development
- Deliver differentiated instruction to students with diverse academic and behavioral needs
- Work collaboratively with administrators, colleagues, and support staff
- Build strong relationships with youth, including those with challenging behaviors
- Communicate clearly in written and verbal formats
Work Environment
- Setting: Secure juvenile facility
- Conditions: May require standing, walking, or moving throughout a secure campus
- Schedule: Monday - Friday (8:00 A.M - 5:00 P.M.)
