POSITION:                 PART-TIME PROFESSIONAL LABORATORY ASSISTANT; Medical Assisting - Hall Campus

REPORTS TO:           Program Director           

EFFECTIVE:             Janauary 13th  

 

JOB SUMMARY

Under direct supervision of the Dean of Allied Health, and indirect supervision of the Program Director, this position is responsible for assisting instructors with providing education and/or training to students.

MAJOR DUTIES

General Responsibilities

· Under general supervision, will prepare for each class laboratory session by preparing supplies and equipment for students.

· Assist individual students in the lab and class environment.

· Assist with demonstration, testing, and grading.

· Oversee and monitor laboratory space and/or computer lab.

· Will assist in maintaining, problem-solving, and trouble-shooting with equipment or software within lab settings.

· Will assure adherence to safety and cleanliness standards, maintaining an effective and safe learning environment in which students can perform program-level tasks.

· Will prepare laboratory schedule as assigned, and enforce all lab policies, rules, and procedures.

· Will assist in collection and management of confidential student data.

· Coordinate student participation in health fairs, field trips, and community health services.

· Maintain inventory, order supplies/equipment, receive; stock shelves and cabinets.

· Perform other duties as assigned by instructors

Student Evaluation

· Communicates students’ progress to students and discusses appropriate changes to improve performance as needed.

· Accurately records pertinent information in student’s record as required.

· Calculates, records and reports students’ grades

 

COMPETENCIES:

·         Knowledge of course standards, and skill/expertise in subject area

·         Ability to understand, accept and follow directions

·         Skill in the operation of lab equipment and/or computers

·         Appropriate oral and written communication skills that effectively communicate information to students who might function at the new, beginning, or advanced level

·         Ability to perform lab competencies, maintain accurate records, prepare lesson materials

·         Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel

·         Effective decision making and problem solving skills

·         Flexibility to adjust work hours based on the needs of the college, 15 hours weekly

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

· The work consists of varied duties associated with laboratory assistance and instruction. The variety of tasks to be managed contributes to the complexity of the position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

· The work is typically performed while standing or walking and/or sitting at a desk.

· The work is typically performed in an applicable lab setting and/or classroom.

· The work can be performed on multiple campuses, including high schools, and clinical sites.

· In some program or course areas, physical demands may extend to physical movement and positions for extended time periods, including bending and lifting while standing or sitting.

· Individual program physical demands are available from the appropriate Dean

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Current CMA (AAMA) or RMA (AMT) credential

OR

Associate’s degree in medical assisting or related field and one year of experience in medical assisting OR

Three (3) years’ medical assisting experience within last five (5) years AND

Current healthcare provider CPR certification

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (in addition to minimum qualifications & competencies):

·         Previous work experience in tutoring or instruction of students in a post-secondary environment

·         Familiarity with Blackboard LMS

·         Ability to work cooperatively with others in a fair and unbiased manner, and to maintain a pleasant, professional relationship with students and faculty/staff

·         Ability to keep up-to-date on clinical techniques and information, hardware/software, or lab equipment information, and to assist in making informed decisions in this area

·         Ability to work given policies and guidelines, with minimal supervision, and the ability to resolve normal work problems as they arise, and coordinate with the instructor issues that arise outside these parameters
