Job Summary

The Instructional Design Specialist position ensures that effective learning strategies, pedagogical principles, and appropriate accessible formatting (as required by Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act) are applied in the online learning environment; and will be responsible for collaborating with and assisting faculty to analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate instructional content in the Learning Management System (LMS) and third-party products.

 

Essential Functions

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

Collaborate with and assist faculty with online course shells and LMS usage for online course delivery.

·         Assist in analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating instructional content in the Blackboard LMS and with usage of third-party vendor products. Build course shell framework for new courses or those without current designated course builders.

·         Analyze, troubleshoot, and detect deficiencies in course shells, edit shells for consistency, grammatical correctness, clarity, and accuracy and make corrections in collaboration with faculty members responsible for shell.

·         Assist faculty in formatting course shells and material using appropriate accessibility formatting as required by Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.

 

Develop, implement, and provide LMS training to faculty and staff

·         Provide training and training documents to groups or individual faculty or other course shell users either in person or virtually as required by the Director of Online Learning.

·         Develop Scribes, screenshot documents, etc. to aid all faculty with common issues within the LMS.

·         Provide training for new college supported software integrated with the LMS.  

 

Provides assistance to the Director of Online Learning

·         Assists with the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, and procedures consistent with the College’s mission.

·         Attends department POC meetings at the request of the Director of Online Learning.

·         Works with Director of Online Learning to maintain a schedule for consistency of tasks amongst the College as it pertains to the LMS.

 

Collaborate with other staff and associates 

·         Provides cross-functional assistance and responsibility on committees or other college enhancement teams.

 

Other Duties as Assigned

 

 

Required Education and Experience

·         Associate Degree *and* three (3) years of work-related experience.

NOTE: Experience may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.

 

Preferred Education and Experience

·         Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or related field of study *and* two (2) years related work experience.

·         Minimum of three (3) years post-secondary experience as an LMS end-user.

·         Minimum of three (3) years post-secondary instructional experience, which includes conducting and evaluating needs assessments

·         Knowledge of third-party LTIs

·         Minimum of one (1) year post-secondary experience as an LMS administrator.

·         Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office 2016 (or later) and Adobe Acrobat Pro applications

 

Competencies

·         Extensive understanding of all components, features, and functions of the LMS

·         Knowledge of instructional design theory and best practices in developing course shells for instruction.

·         Knowledge of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and ability to format documents and course shells to meet regulatory accessibility compliance.

·         Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to provide training to other individuals.

·         Exceptional computer/technology skills. Proficiency in software packages needed for online instructional delivery and record keeping management (MS Office, teleconferencing software, LMS, social media, and other as needed).

·         Ability to learn new technologies and applications.

·         Advanced interpersonal skills

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment and technologies, computer hardware, software, and other related technologies.

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear.  The employee must occasionally lift or move office products and supplies, up to 25 pounds.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time on campus position with requirements to travel as needed to all campuses and to also conduct business and training online from the work office. Days and hours worked are established to meet functional need up to a maximum of 29 hours per week and may sometimes include evening work hours. In addition, some weekend hours may be required in rare emergency or backlog work situations.

 

Travel

Travel to other campuses and sites is required, overnight travel is not needed.
