Environmental Engineer 1-Safe Dams Unit

This position is located in the Georgia Environmental Protection Division – Watershed Protection Branch – Regulatory Support Program, Safe Dams Unit. The incumbent in this position will be part of a dynamic team that regulates the high hazard dams in the state. The incumbent in this position will review plans and specifications for construction of new dams and rehabilitation of existing dams; ensure compliance with permit requirements; inspect dams as needed; draft enforcement documents, and review inspection reports and technical documents. As this position involves routine interaction with the public, regulated industry, consultants, and other governmental officials, the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts is essential. Good technical writing skills are also essential for this position. The incumbent will also be responsible for management and update of database information and should have experience with Microsoft Word and Excel. This position requires office and field work. There is some travel involved including some overnight stays as the Unit covers the entire state. The incumbent in this position must have a current, valid driver’s license. NOTE: This position requires field work in some remote locations near lakes. Selected candidates for this position must be able to do some hiking to remote dam locations and must be able to walk up and down steep slopes of the dam for inspection purposes. Safety gear and related supplies (e.g., life vests, boots, snake chaps, bug/tick repellent) are provided; however, selected candidates should be aware that they may encounter snakes, alligators, ticks and other bugs while performing this job. Selected candidates should be comfortable working near water and marshy areas.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with inspection of dams
Experience in dam safety activities
Experience with land surveying
Experience in the interpretation and application of state and federal regulations
Possess a Civil or Environmental Engineering Degree
Possess the Engineer in Training certification or are registered as a Professional Engineer
Experience with hydraulics and hydrology
