Elementary ASL Teacher
Job Summary
The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) – Division of State Schools is recruiting for an experienced Elementary ASL Teacher to support American Sign Language (ASL) and English at the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf (AASD) in the Elementary Department. The Elementary ASL Teacher will work under the direction of the principal and provide technical assistance for the full implementation of the Division of State Schools’ adopted curricula and monitoring of the American Sign Language program with an emphasis on ASL and English (reading and writing) in response to intervention needed for students’ success. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Description of Duties
- Work with classroom teachers to develop ASL/English dual language instructional programs and models
- Provide leadership in the evaluation of students’ receptive and expressive language skills in ASL for reports in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings
- Assist teachers and support staff in designing appropriate instructional environments to support students’ sign communication needs
- Act as a sign language resource to instructional staff related to language use, variation, technical signs, communication strategies, etc.
- Participate in the development of student evaluation reports by evaluating students sign communication abilities and participates in the decision-making process as a member of the evaluation team
- Perform other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
- Possesses or is eligible to obtain Georgia Teacher Certification in the grade or content area of the prospective position
- A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience in elementary classroom to deaf/hard of hearing students
- Prior experience with American Sign Language (ASL) Evaluation of children
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in curriculum development
- ASL proficiency at 3+ or above as measured by the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI)
