Job Summary

The Georgia Department of Education is recruiting for an Attorney - Legal Analysis Specialist. Under limited supervision, this position oversees the provision of analysis and/or recommendations on legal issues within the scope and authority of the agency and handles complex issues. The successful incumbent may act as a lead worker and/or supervise support staff, plans work of assigned staff, and act as a resource to answer questions and evaluate the status of reimbursements or recoupments and coordinate work in legal proceedings litigated by the Department of Law or other prosecuting authority. Duties include but are not limited to:

Job Duties

  • Develop and implement division/unit policies and procedures

  • Develop, oversee, and implement administrative processes designed to maintain and monitor the legal compliance of department processes

  • Drafts amendments to existing contracts and standardized letters and notices related to administrative legal procedures

  • Implement administrative processes designed to maintain and monitor the legal compliance of departmental processes and activities. 

  • Participate in the implementation of settlements, agreements, and/or legal judgments within approved guidelines Prepare grants and contract proposals and administer contracts with funding agencies. 

  • Provide analysis, answers, or recommendations regarding complex legal, liability and/or risk-management issues

  • Provide legal services such as writing articles and drafting new or amended legislation or regulations. 

  • Provide research and analysis of legal, policy and environmental issues. 

  • Researches and analyzes current statutory and case law affecting the agency and/or programs. 

  • Selects appropriate methods and techniques for resolving problems

Preferred Qualifications

Strong knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

Juris Doctorate in a related area from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity and three (3) years of relevant legal experience; or three (3) years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 3 (LEP022).
