OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

The mission of the Georgia Department of Public Safety is to work cooperatively with all levels of government to provide a safe environment for residents and visitors to our state. Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency - GEMA/HS

Maintains accountability and physical security of assigned computers, communications devices, and credentials in the workplace, at home and while in transit.

Telecommunications Tech 1 coordinates voice and data communication traffic within the State Warning Point (SWP) for GEMA/HS according to established federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

Duties of the Telecommunications Tech 1 include, but are not limited to:

Performing assigned communications functions for GEMA/HS, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and other agencies as required.

Understanding and following all directives, policies, protocols, and checklists.

Actively working as part of a cohesive team on assigned shifts, across all shifts and throughout GEMA/HS to deliver excellent customer service to the public and all who interact with the SWP.

Sending, receiving, relaying, monitoring, logging, recording (voice), reporting and interpreting emergency and non-emergency information from various information sources including, but not limited to the State’s electronic crisis information management system (WebEOC), resource lists, checklists, GEMA/HS staff, the National Weather Service, and other agencies, organizations, and sources.

 

TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECHS WORK ON A ROTATING 12-HOUR SCHEDULE THAT INCLUDES WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS.

 

 POSITION SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Availability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and irregular schedules,

 AND

 Ability to telework, and agreeing to and following the GEMA/HS Standard Operating Procedures for teleworking,

 AND

 Availability to report for work on short notice,  

 AND

 Ability to travel overnight as required.

 

 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The selected candidate will be required to pass a background investigation as a condition of employment. Items that may be examined in a background check include but are not limited to credit records, criminal records, education records, past employers, military records, state licensing/certification records, and driving records.

High school diploma or GED AND one (1) year of experience in customer service or interacting with the public.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of an associate degree or higher in any area of study from an accredited college or university.

Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council Certification as a Basic Communications Officer.

Experience effectively using multiple technology applications to complete assignments.

Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office and Office 365 to include Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Proficiency in operating radio and data communications equipment.

 

 

 

High school diploma/GED and six (6) months of experience in customer service or providing information to the public.
