OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. Inspector General, Office of the State - OIG

Conducts investigations to obtain evidence of reported fraud, waste, abuse, corruption, or violations of state rules, regulations, or statutes.

 

Duties:

 

OIG Investigators are classified as certified Georgia Peace Officers, and they enforce the criminal laws of the State of Georgia. Specifically, they investigate criminal activities, execute search warrants, conduct surveillance operations, interview persons in connection with criminal cases being investigated, prepare detailed investigative reports, assist in prosecution of cases, testify in court, recover fraudulently obtained property, gather criminal intelligence, apprehend wanted persons, and perform other related law enforcement duties.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts investigations to ascertain facts and obtain evidence on alleged violations and misconduct; interviews witnesses and obtains statements.
  • Conducts training and outreach for interested parties.
  • Explains the law or other agency regulations to the parties in violation to give support or secure compliance.
  • Inspects business records and/or facilities.
  • Reviews and scrutinizes subpoenaed financial records, documents, and records for evidence.
  • Perform analysis to determine misuse of state time, funds, and/or equipment.
  • Prepares summary reports, maintains case files, and documentation of case resolution.
  • Reviews records, documentation, and other evidence for violations of laws or regulations.
  • Participate in surveillance, arrest operations, search operations, and other assignments that may pose the risk of personal bodily harm.
  • Must be willing to travel.
  • Must be willing to work overtime.
  • Must be willing to be on call during non-work hours.

 

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Please note, this is a POST certified law enforcement position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of a four-year degree in a relevant field of study (accounting, finance, criminal justice, information technology, etc.)from an accredited college or university
  • Completion of a master’s degree in a relevant field of study (accounting, finance, criminal justice, information technology, etc.) from an accredited college or university
  • Working knowledge of the criminal justice system AND/OR public administration
  • Professional certification/license as a Certified Public Accountant or Attorney Licensure
  • Professional experience in data analytics using ACL or IDEA software 
  • Certified Fraud Examiner Certification (CFE)
  • Computer or mobile device forensic training.
  • Certified Inspector General Inspector/Evaluator or Investigator Certification from the Association of Inspectors General.
  • Prior experience with administrative and/or criminal internal investigations.

 

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university AND must meet the prerequisites and complete the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program certification. Note: Incumbents in this job are by law considered to be peace officers. Note: Applicants must meet the legal requirements for peace officers as prescribed by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.).
