OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

The mission of the Georgia Department of Public Safety is to work cooperatively with all levels of government to provide a safe environment for residents and visitors to our state. Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, Office of - OCI

Under supervision, investigates alleged or suspected violations of Federal, state, or local laws, rules and regulations to determine if evidence is sufficient to recommend prosecution or to report findings to the appropriate jurisdictional authority for their action.

Collaborates with other authorities on activities such as surveillance, transcription, and research.

Conducts background investigations.

Conducts internal investigations of law enforcement agencies.

Examines records in order to locate links in chain of evidence or information.

Obtains and verifies evidence by interviewing and observing suspects and witnesses, or by analyzing records.

Obtains information related to cases.

Prepares reports that detail investigation findings.

Trains to identify case issues and evidence needed.

 Utilizes proper software programs to store, collate and review financial information and evidence.

Performs other duties as signed.

Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university AND must meet the prerequisites and complete the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program certification OR Two years of experience in law enforcement or related field AND P.O.S.T. certification. Note: Some positions may require incumbent to have a valid Class C driver's license.
