OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

Summary/Objective: 

Under direct supervision, the intern will provide vocational rehabilitation services to individuals with disabilities to support their achievement of competitive, integrated employment outcomes. This paid, part-time internship is designed for current students enrolled in a Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling program at Auburn University, Georgia State University, Mercer University or Thomas University. The position offers hands-on experience that complements academic training and supports the development of core competencies required for professional practice in vocational rehabilitation. 

Essential Functions: 

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to 

perform the essential functions. 

 

1. Conduct interviews with consumers to gather personal, vocational and disability related information. 

 

2. Maintains accurate and timely documentation within an electronic case management system including all interactions with       consumers. 

 

3. Communicate effectively with consumers, including coordinating interpreter and translator services when needed. 

 

4. Reviews and interprets educational, vocational, psychological and medical information while observing rules of confidentiality as stated in departmental guidelines. 

 

5. Assists counselors in determining eligibility, identifying order of selection, completing vocational needs assessment and developing individualized plans for employment. 

 

6. Monitors case movement and ensures timely provision of any identified and necessary assessment services. 

 

7. Maintains confidentiality and adhere to all Agency policies, procedures and federal regulations.

Required Education and Experience: 

  1. Bachelor’s degree in related fields such as Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, Education, Psychology or Social Services. 

AND 

  1. Current enrollment in a Master's program of study at either Auburn University, Georgia State University, Mercer University or Thomas University 

 

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  1. Six months customer service experience in a human service or community-based setting

  2. Six months experience working in a setting with required confidentiality mandates 

 

Supervisory Responsibility: 

None required for this position. 

 

Work Environment: 

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard 

office equipment such as laptop computers and smartphones. 

 

Physical Demands: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or 

hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or 

feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb 

or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift 

and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color 

vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. 

 

Working Conditions: 

Incumbents working in this job perform duties in an office setting. This is a 40-hour 

workweek requirement. The position may involve managing a high-volume workload 

and demands a high level of accuracy while working with deadlines. Regular attendance 

is an important part of being successful in this position. Reasonable accommodations

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a part-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.  

 

Travel: 

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and 

overnight travel may be expected.
