OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

The mission of the Georgia Department of Public Safety is to work cooperatively with all levels of government to provide a safe environment for residents and visitors to our state. Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. JOB SPECIFIC: The Summer Internship Program runs from mid-May to mid-August 2026.  The Summer Internship Program provides students with collaborative and innovative job experiences to complement their academic curriculum.  Students are able to expand and strengthen their professional backgrounds by building professional relationships and learning new skills in various work functions.  Students will have the opportunity to rotate within the departments, such as, Traffic Operations, Construction, Bridge, Roadway Design, and the Office of Materials & Testing.  Under the guidance of an assigned mentor, students are able to gain valuable hands-on experience in a culturally diverse, innovative and multi-specialty work environment.

AGENCY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  •  Enrolled as a full-time or part-time student in an Engineering program at a college, university, or technical institute; OR be taking a pre-engineering course of study from a qualifying college under the Georgia Board of Regents’ Engineering Transfer Program (RETP)

  • 2.0 overall GPA or better
  • Fall of previous year academic transcript
  • Meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States; 18 years of age
  • Meet any additional requirements of the attending school's Internship Program

     

     

    THE SELECTED APPLICANT FOR THE POSITION WILL BE SUBJECT TO A REFERENCE CHECK AND CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK, WHERE APPLICABLE

     

     

    IMPORTANT NOTE:

Students are paid on an hourly basis in accordance with their current academic classification as of the Fall Semester of the previous year. This is a temporary position and there are no benefits, earned leave, or paid holidays. Students may work a maximum of 40 hours per week for up to 12 weeks.

 The pay for this position is as follows:

  •   0-59 semester hours-$20.00 per hour

  •  60-120 semester hours- $21.00 per hour
  •  Graduate Students- $23.00 per hour (must have bachelor's and enrolled in graduate program)
