OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

The mission of the Georgia Department of Public Safety is to work cooperatively with all levels of government to provide a safe environment for residents and visitors to our state. Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Special Education, Education, or a related field.
  • GA PSC certification in a content area.
  • GA PSC certification in special education, or the ability to receive a Non-Renewable certification. 
  • 3 or more years of leadership experience in previous roles.

Notes:

 

This position will require you to:

  1. Oversee and manage the implementation of special education programs including instructional strategies and resource allocation.
  2. Develop and implement policies, provide professional development, and collaborate with various stakeholders to create inclusive learning environments.
  3. Ensure adherence to state and federal laws, such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), regarding special education services.
  4. Work with teachers, students, parents, administrators to develop and implement individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  5. Provide training and support to special education teachers and other staff on best practices and relevant sped topics.
  6. Ensure that students with disabilities receive appropriate accommodations, modifications, and support services to facilitate their academic and social-emotional growth.
  7. Facilitate communication and collaboration among all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, administrators, and external agencies.
  8. Maintain accurate records of student progress, IEPs, and other relevant data related to special education services.
  9. Represent the needs and interests of students with disabilities and advocate for their education rights.
  10. Manage programs, coordinate resources and lead teams.
  11. The ability to effectively communicate with diverse stakeholders.
  12. Ability to identify and resolve issues related to special education services.
  13. Travel to facilities and attend trainings as needed.
  14. Maintain an active IEP caseload, ensuring timely development, review, and implementation of effective, individualized education programs (IEPs) for both newly enrolled and continuing students.
  15. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams following the student intake process to gather comprehensive data and develop IEPs tailored to students’ academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
  16. Utilize Child Find procedures in GUIDE  to proactively identify students with suspected disabilities upon arrival at GDC, ensuring appropriate referrals, evaluations, and eligibility determinations in compliance with IDEA and state regulations.
  17. Request and review student records from previous school districts to collect educational history, IEP documentation, assessment data, and other relevant background information that informs placement, services, and IEP development.

This is a statewide position so travel will be required.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and eligibility to obtain at least a Georgia teacher's associate professional fourth-year certificate; or current, appropriate Georgia teacher's fourth-year certificate in the area of assignment; or one (1) year of experience required at the lower level Instructor 2 (EDP021) or position equivalent.
