OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. Youth Advocacy Division- Assistant Public Defender 1, 2, 3, 4


The Georgia Public Defender Council’s Youth Advocacy Division is currently seeking highly qualified candidates to fill Assistant Public Defender 1, 2, 3, and 4 positions. We are specifically seeking attorneys with extensive experience in juvenile defense, including comprehensive representation of youth in delinquency, dependency, and status offense proceedings. Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated history of commitment to youth justice and a deep understanding of the unique legal, psychological, and social issues impacting young clients.

Primary responsibilities include providing skilled and dedicated legal representation to indigent youth facing criminal allegations, involvement in deprivation/dependency actions, and other matters heard in Juvenile Courts. Candidates should bring substantial courtroom experience in Juvenile and Youth Courts, including frequent appearances under SB440 in Superior Court, and must be prepared to manage complex juvenile caseloads with a trauma-informed and client-centered approach.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a current member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia
  • Must meet the legal qualifications to perform the assigned duties for the relevant APD level
  • Proven ability to handle juvenile court matters independently or with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated excellence in legal advocacy, case strategy, and courtroom litigation
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • A deep commitment to the mission of indigent defense and youth advocacy

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive litigation and negotiation experience in Juvenile Court
  • Prior handling of cases under SB440 and other transfer provisions in Superior Court
  • Familiarity with adolescent development and best practices in juvenile defense
  • Ability to travel statewide to represent clients in various Juvenile Courts

Description of Duties:

The Assistant Public Defender positions (APD 1, 2, 3, and 4) involve providing competent, zealous, and developmentally appropriate defense representation to indigent youth across the state. Attorneys in these roles will engage in beginning- to advanced-level legal work, depending on classification, and will handle cases ranging from routine to complex juvenile matters. Duties may also include mentoring junior attorneys and participating in training related to youth defense. Other related duties as assigned.

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity and one (1) year of relevant legal experience; or one (1) year of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 1 (LEP020).
