OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

Administrative Services, Department of - DOAS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Fiscal Services unit of the Department of Administrative Services seeks an Accountant 1 who will perform entry level accounting duties in the areas of accounts receivable, accounts payable and general ledger, according to DOAS established policies and standards, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Under supervision will perform responsibilities including but not limited to analyzing financial information and preparing financial reports to document or maintain records of assets, liabilities, profit and loss, or other financial activities. This is an entry level position therefore incumbents may require additional training or experience to gain full proficiency in some or all of the job responsibilities. 

 

Job Responsibilities:

Ø  Serves as subject matter expert or organization resource in assigned areas.

Ø  Analyzes and reconciles accounting data and transactions requiring the knowledge of complex rules and regulations; initiates contact with outside agents, institutions, or with other internal units, to develop and implement a solution to accounting discrepancies.

Ø  Prompt and immediate processing of transactions according to specified financial and accounting practices defined and established for the assigned sub-systems.

Ø  Balances and reconciles accounting records, such as bank reconciliations and customer accounts; Determines sources of errors by researching accounting records, recording and/or directing correction of entries.

Ø  Assists in monthly, quarterly and annual financial closing processes with preparing and posting journal entries.

Ø  Assists with preparing financial reports for management.

Ø  Assist in development of policies and procedures for assigned areas.

Ø  Maintains complete, accurate and readily accessible accounting files that conform to applicable policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.

Ø  Follows guidelines for providing information to others and auditors when necessary.

Ø  Maintains confidentiality of records, files and other documentation.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of business operations in AR and AP
  • Knowledge of accounting theory
  • Ability to retrieve information from the accounting system, analyze, identify and investigate discrepancies
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience using Microsoft office to include Word, Excel, and Outlook

 

This position may require some travel.

Completion of a pre-employment background check is required.

 

DOAS participates in a hybrid work environment within office days required.

 

MINIMUM ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS: 

Bachelor's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following items below.  PLEASE CLEARLY INDICATE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THESE QUALIFICATIONS ON YOUR RESUME.   

  • Intermediate Excel skills (creating spreadsheets, formulas, pivot tables, etc.)
  • Government accounting experience
  • At least one year experience working in AP, AR and general accounting environment.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Financials
