Department of Transportation — Internship Program

The Department of Transportation is looking for motivated, forward-thinking interns to join our mission of keeping our communities connected and our transportation systems moving safely and efficiently. 

JOB SUMMARY 

The State Utilities Office Intern will gain exposure to the daily operations of GDOT’s utilities coordination efforts. Interns will learn about Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), Railroad Safety and Coordination, Permitting, Preconstruction, Construction support, Billing and Payments, and SUO Leadership. This internship provides insight into how utility and railroad coordination supports transportation projects from planning through construction.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Assist with reviewing utility permits and accommodation requests 

• Support Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) documentation and coordination 

• Observe railroad safety and coordination processes 

• Assist with preconstruction and construction utility coordination activities 

• Support billing, payment tracking, and documentation processes 

• Participate in meetings and project discussions with SUO staff and leadership 

• Help maintain records and ensure compliance with GDOT policies and procedures 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:

The selected candidate must meet the advertised minimum qualifications to include State Entry Qualifications as well as Agency Specific Minimum Qualifications.

STATE QUALIFICATIONS

 • Student enrolled in a Georgia high school, technical college, or university/college. Must be currently enrolled during the internship. 

AGENCY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

• Enrolled as a full-time or part-time student 

• Overall GPA of 2.0 of better 

• Fall of previous year academic transcript 

• Meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States; 18 years of age 

• Meet any additional requirements of the attending school's Internship Program 

AGENCY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

• Students working towards a degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, or related discipline.

THE SELECTED APPLICANT FOR THE POSITION WILL BE SUBJECT TO A REFERENCE CHECK AND CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK, WHERE APPLICABLE 

IMPORTANT NOTE: 

This is a temporary internship position. Interns are paid on an hourly basis in accordance with their current academic classification as of the previous Fall Semester. This position does not include benefits, earned leave, or paid holidays. Interns may work up to 40 hours per week during the program period. 

The pay for this position is as follows: 

• (0–59 semester hours): $20.00 per hour 

• (60–120 semester hours): $21.00 per hour 

• Graduate students (must hold a bachelor’s degree and be enrolled in a graduate program): $23.00 per hour
