The Georgia Department of Defense is seeking someone to serve as our Senior Accountant within our agency’s Financial Management Division (FMD). The accounting section of FMD is responsible for the accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, general ledger, and asset management operations for the agency.

We also offer opportunities to directly support Georgia’s National Guard soldiers/airmen and their families. In any given year, there are multiple opportunities to assist with initiatives of our agency’s Family Readiness unit.

 

Specific Function Areas Typically Includes:

  • A/R Federal and State Funds.   
  • Cash Management.
  • General Ledger Accounting. 
  • Bank account reconciliations.   
  • Other GL account reconciliations.  
  • Capital Asset Accounting     
  • Maintain and perform periodic physical inventories for equipment.     
  • Key contributor to State and Federal year-end Close.  
  • Developing internal and external financial reports.
  • Assist with Georgia National Guard’s State Active Duty Missions.   
  • Other assigned projects and duties.

     

     

 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates a high level of proficiency in core accounting concepts:    
    • Review and analyze balances in varies accounts to ensure accuracy and validity
    •  Recognizing discrepancies using various reports, queries or other tools.
    • Strong working knowledge on how to reconcile, recognize, and correctly identify how to fix the problem.     
  • Correctly applies Generally Accepted Accounting Principles in recording financial activity within the agency/state accounting system.    
  • Insures all internal and external policies are being followed.    
  • Assists with development of new policies to ensure all goals are being met.     
  • Prepares various standard statutory, regulatory and GAAP financial reports as required.  
  • Provides accounting expertise on general matters as needed.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to those applicants who, in addition to meeting the entry level qualifications, have current and significant professional level experience in any combination of the following:

  • Recent functional and working knowledge of GL, AR, AM PeopleSoft (TeamWorks).
  • Advanced reconciliation and problem-solving experience.  

     

  • Advanced in Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables, formulas, V-Lookup, etc).  
  • General ledger knowledge and experience.     
  • Five (5) or more years of current or recent State of Georgia accounting experience. 
  • Completion of State’s Primary Governmental Accounting Series.   
  • Current or recent experience with federal funding.

     

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid position  (In office and remote working) - after being fully trained and working independently
  • Full-time 40-hour position.   
  • Requires occasional overtime.      
  • Local periodic travel may be required.


Additional Information:

Selected applicant must possess a valid driver's license and pass a pre-employment background investigation, which includes a Georgia criminal records search, a national fingerprint scan, a pre- employment drug test (post-hire will be placed in the pool for the State Random Drug Testing Program), AND a post-employment federal background investigation.

Bachelor's degree in accounting and three (3) years of professional accounting job-related experience; or two (2) years of experience at the lower level Accountant 3 (FIP022) or position equivalent.
