JOB SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, serves as a lead engineer performing engineering assignments. Provides engineering assistance developing project plans, designs, or traffic engineering studies and other related documents, field experience with traffic signals and ITS hardware, cost estimates and other engineering technical reports for transportation projects. Provides training, support and knowledge sharing to other engineers.

 

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES: Under limited supervision, serves as Design Review Engineer for the Office of Engineering Services responsible for providing quality reviews of construction project plans, contract documents, specifications, and selected design documents to provide quality assurance in a timely manner. Completes the scheduling, preparation, conducting and reporting activities for Field Plan Review Inspections. Resolves review issues and maintains appropriate records. This position is assigned to the OGC but may reside in a District or Area Office.  This position will conduct field plan reviews regionally but may require statewide travel as needed. 

 

STATE ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an A.B.E.T. accredited program OR equivalent degree in a related field and a Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the State of Georgia and two (2) years of job-related experience OR Professional Engineer (PE) License with two (2) years of job-related experience.

·         Note: For international degrees: Applicants with a bachelor’s degree from an international institution must submit a course-by-course evaluation from a GDOT approved credentialing provider.

 

AGENCY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Working knowledge of engineering and construction principles and practices of design criteria, and GDOT specifications

·         Ability to read, interpret, and apply construction documents, including plans and special provisions

·         Ability to perform mathematical operations needed to solve practical engineering problems

·         Ability to perform computations necessary to review and verify earthwork, drainage, geometric design, and capacity analysis

·         Ability to identify and analyze constructability problems, and use sound judgment to generate alternatives and recommend a solution

·         Ability to express ideas and facts to individuals or groups effectively

·         Ability to negotiate and develop mutually acceptable solutions

·         Ability to problem solve and make sound, well-informed decisions

·         Ability to recognize opportunities to help the department accomplish its objectives

·         Committed to providing quality customer service

·         Knows the policies, procedures and rules of the department and operates effectively within them

·         Ability to adapt behavior and work methods in response to new information changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles; is open to change and new information

·         Ability to organize work and set priorities

·         Ability to use provided computer applications to work more efficiently

 

AGENCY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Ability to visit project sites which require overnight, out of town travel

·         Possesses the physical mobility necessary to maneuver over irregular terrain, and varying and uneven surfaces, in order to perform field plan reviews

·         Ability to make correct inferences from available information; mentally visualize stages of construction and completed project from project plans

·         Ability to efficiently learn technical information pertinent to the job

·         Maintains a professional bearing when representing the office or the department

·         Displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment toward completing assignments; knows the policies, procedures and rules of the department and operates effectively within them

·         Ability to recognize opportunities to help the department accomplish its objectives

·         Ability to use provided computer applications to work more efficiently, see detail and interpret plans and contract documents quickly and accurately

·         Strong working knowledge of AASHTO and GDOT Design Criteria.

·         Ability to use imagination to develop new insights into engineering and design problems
