 JOB SUMMARY: Under supervision, provides entry level professional support in one or more of the following areas: OMAT, maintenance, construction, intermodal, planning, utilities, surveying, environmental and traffic.

 JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES: Under general supervision assists with the planning, design, cost estimating, and coordination of traffic or transportation systems to maximize safety, efficiency and economy of operations.  Participates in the daily functions of the Office of Traffic Operations, which includes but is not limited to the following:  assisting with the review of pertinent elements of highway design plans for safety, operations and permitting; querying and evaluating crash data; applying the principles of the Highway Safety Manual, GDOT Driveway Manual, MUTCD, and other applicable manuals and policies by preparing layouts and sketches; field data collection.  This is the entry/training level of the Traffic Specialist job series. Incumbents at this level may require additional training or experience to gain full proficiency in some or all of the job responsibilities. This position may be required to conduct safety enhancement reviews including fatality investigations.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The selected candidate must meet the advertised minimum qualifications to include State Entry Qualifications as well as Agency Specific Minimum Qualifications.

 STATE ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Bachelor's degree in a related field OR Associate's degree in a related field OR One year of experience at position equivalent.

 AGENCY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

·         Basic experience with traffic- or operations-related reviews, analysis, studies, or maintenance.

·         Basic experience with safety-related reviews or analysis.

·         Possesses basic knowledge to perform traffic operational studies or reviews for assigned areas or projects within a District.

·          Possesses basic knowledge of traffic engineering principles, methods, policies and procedures.

·         Demonstrated ability to interpret, analyze, and summarize information for the purpose of writing technical reports related to transportation engineering.

·         Demonstrated ability to apply appropriate functions to solve engineering-related mathematical problems.  

·         Possesses good communication skills with the demonstrated ability to express ideas and facts to individuals or groups effectively and to work effectively with managers, co-workers and external staff. 

·         Demonstrated experience using basic computer applications such as word processing and database management programs.  

·         Demonstrated experience reading and interpreting pertinent information on plans, maps, and graphs quickly and accurately. 

·         Possesses the physical strength and agility necessary to walk throughout project or area of study.  

·         Possesses a basic knowledge of the organizational structure of the Department and general organizational rules and policies. 

·         Demonstrated ability to make sound, well-informed decisions to develop new insights into situations and apply innovative solutions to problems. 

·         Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to change and effectively manage own priorities setting well-defined and realistic personal goals.  

·         Committed to providing quality service to customers.  

·         Displays a high level of commitment toward work and a high standard of ethical conduct; displays a professional image. 

 IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL GDOT JOBS

The interview is just one part of the overall selection process and is not the only criteria used to make the final selection.  In addition to the interview, the final selection is based on the applicant’s work history and performance (documented in HR and/or Office files), PeopleSoft/employee status (i.e. rehire code), employee performance reviews, personnel file review (HR & Office Files), criminal background check, employment reference checks (including references and commendations from Managers and other relevant documentation) and, for supervisory positions, demonstrated leadership skills based on past and current work history will be considered.  

 

Good Employment Standing:

In accordance with the Interview and Selection Process (ISP), an applicant must have no active disciplinary actions to be in good employment standing.  Actions that may disqualify an applicant include letters of reprimand (active for 12 months after issuance date); suspension without pay or disciplinary demotion (active for 12 months from the effective date); Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) and Leave Restriction Plans (active until 12 months after the date of conclusion).  In addition, an employee must have an overall ePerformance rating score of three (3) or higher on their most current evaluation.  Please note that Memorandums of Concern are not considered disqualifying factors.  Human Resources may remove any employee from consideration for selection who is pending a disciplinary action; however, if the action is resolved in the employee’s favor, he or she will be allowed to compete.
