Job Summary:

Under general supervision, investigates alleged or suspected violations of Federal, state, or local laws, rules, and regulations to determine if the evidence is sufficient to recommend prosecution or to report findings to the appropriate jurisdictional authority for their action.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Sworn Positions hired after July 1, 2026, are required to complete a Physical Agility Test (PAT) as a contingent of employment with the Department of Juvenile Justice. The PAT will be explained further during the interview process.

  • The investigator will be required to travel to different locations within an assigned area, but could be called to travel outside of the area. 

     

  • The investigator will be required to respond to State of Emergency requests and other duties as requested.

  • Collaborate with other authorities on activities such as surveillance, transcription, and research.

  • Develop investigative leads through a complete review of case files.

  • Develop comprehensive investigative plans for each investigation.

  • Interview parents, guardians, or court service workers within specified time limits of referral.

  • Visit various locations to gather information on youth efficiently.

  • Coordinates with local law enforcement agencies to facilitate the progress of investigations.

  • Keep the supervisor informed of investigation progress and advise of significant developments as required.

  • Record all significant investigative activity in case files in a clear, concise, and timely manner.

  • Review case files for all necessary and appropriate documentation and to ensure compliance with established guidelines.

  • Maintains case files according to established guidelines.

  • Conducts administrative and criminal investigations.

  • Obtains arrest warrants from appropriate courts for youth and/or adults.

  • Testifies in a court of law for all proceedings related to investigations.

  • Examines records to locate links in the chain of evidence or information.

  • Prepares reports and other correspondence within specified time limits.

  • Draft reports and other correspondence using the proper format, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Research and include all supporting documentation for reports before submission.

  • Make proper distribution of all correspondence according to established guidelines.

  • Identifies case issues and evidence needed based on analysis of charges, complaints, or allegations of law violations.

  • Obtains and verifies evidence by interviewing and observing suspects and witnesses or by analyzing records.

  • Perform criminal background checks according to established guidelines.

 

 

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making.

  • Ability to use proper and effective interview and interrogation techniques.

  • Knowledge of law enforcement databases and other available sources of information.

  • Knowledge of legal procedures and processes.

  • Knowledge of case management tools, techniques, technology, and software

  • Ability to conduct surveillance, use covert devices, and interview informants.

     

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university, Georgia P.O.S.T. certification, and one (1) year of related experience.

  • Or Georgia P.O.S.T. certification and three (3) years of experience in law enforcement or related field.

  • Or Georgia P.O.S.T. certification and one (1) year of experience required at the lower-level Criminal Investigator 1 (PSP090) or position equivalent.

Note: Some positions may require the incumbent to have a valid Class C driver's license. o This position will be filled in the South Unit.

The position requires a Georgia POST certification in Basic Law Enforcement. This position is authorized by Georgia Law [OCGA 35-8-2(8) and 40-4A-8] and by the Commissioner of Juvenile Justice to be designated as a Peace Officer while in the course of his/her employment duties with the Department of Juvenile Justice to exercise the power of arrest and to carry weapons, including firearms. This position is required to abide by all Georgia POST requirements, including training on the use of deadly force and firearms qualification. This position is full-time. o Enforces State of Georgia Criminal statutes and DJJ policy regarding youth supervised by DJJ, staff employed by DJJ, and vendors contracted with DJJ.

Prepare and execute criminal arrest/search warrants.

Must be in good standing with POST PBLE certification.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four or more years (total) of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in investigative work in a federal, state, or local law enforcement agency.

  • Reside within a 50-mile radius of Houston County.
