Position Summary
The Campus Police Officer promotes a safe, secure, and inclusive environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors by serving as a uniformed law enforcement presence on campus. Officers conduct proactive patrols, respond to emergencies, enforce state laws and campus regulations, investigate incidents, and support the overall safety mission of West Georgia Technical College. This role requires sound judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to respond effectively to a wide range of situations—from routine service calls to critical emergencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Campus Safety & Patrol

  • Conduct routine foot and vehicle patrols of all campus properties to ensure the security of buildings, grounds, and college assets.
  • Monitor campus activity, deter criminal behavior, and respond to suspicious persons, incidents, or safety concerns.
  • Lock and unlock buildings as required and monitor facilities using surveillance systems.
  • Enforce campus regulations, traffic and parking rules, and state laws, including investigating vehicle accidents occurring on private property.

Emergency Response

  • Respond promptly to all calls for service, including medical emergencies, disturbances, alarms, and criminal incidents.
  • Provide first aid and CPR as necessary and coordinate with emergency medical services, fire personnel, or external law enforcement agencies.
  • Maintain clear and continuous communication with dispatch and other officers during emergencies.

Law Enforcement & Investigations

  • Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of criminal and non-criminal incidents.
  • Collect field notes and accurately document information to complete official incident and investigative reports using CAD/ARMS reporting systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Federal Clery Act and ensure reportable incidents are documented and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Testify professionally in criminal court or administrative hearings when required.

Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and visitors through proactive engagement and service.
  • Communicate clearly, respectfully, and empathetically with diverse community members.
  • Assist individuals in need, including those experiencing mental health crises, intoxication, disability-related challenges, or other vulnerabilities.
  • Support and participate in safety and crime-prevention initiatives and educational programming.

Crisis & Special Response

  • Serve as the first line of response in active shooter events, medical emergencies, fire incidents, Title IX-related matters, weather emergencies, and other critical situations.
  • Exercise sound judgment and de-escalation techniques to reduce the risk of harm while upholding the dignity, rights, and safety of all individuals.
  • Employ appropriate levels of force when necessary, consistent with departmental policy and Georgia law.
  • Physical Demands

  • Maintain a level of physical fitness that allows for extended periods of walking or standing, responding quickly on foot, climbing stairs, performing CPR, and assisting with lifting or carrying individuals.
  • Lift and carry up to 40 pounds and safely effect arrests when necessary.
  • Professional Conduct

  • Uphold the highest ethical and professional standards in all interactions.
  • Demonstrate calmness, empathy, and impulse control during high-stress or volatile situations.
  • Resolve conflicts professionally, whether between individuals, groups, or between community members and the College.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Current Georgia POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) Certification with no active probation, suspensions, or investigations.
  • Minimum of two years of active law enforcement patrol experience.
