 General Description:

The Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) is a state organization dedicated to helping build strong, vibrant communities through the development of safe, decent and affordable housing. DCA is seeking a Senior Accountant for its Georgia Housing Finance Authority (GHFA) team. This position will be responsible for performing accounting duties that require independent judgment and initiative. This position will initiate ACH and wire disbursements, enter accounts payable information, prepare journal entries, and complete general ledger reconciliations.  In addition, this position will research and resolve general ledger variances, provide information to auditors and other third parties, and be skilled at using financial and grant management systems.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the relationship of GL balance and its subsidiary ledger balances, initiating bank wires and ACH’s, reconciliation of source data to accounting modules
  • Ability to accurately prepare accounting entries and adjustments and perform mathematical computations
  • Ability to retrieve information from the accounting system and identify and investigate discrepancies
  • Ability to work with federal forms and applicable regulations
  • Ability to review source documents, such as accounting reports, invoices, reviews, analyzes and resolves related problems
  • Ability to provide support to auditors and other reviewers and perform clerical responsibilities. Responds to requests for information/advice solves clerical/accounting problems
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and collaborate with program managers
  • Skill in Excel and data analysis methods
  • Ability to interpret and present data to management team
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks

Agency Specific Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university AND One year of professional accounting experience

OR

Bachelor's degree in business administration from an accredited college or university AND Two years of professional accounting experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree in public administration from an accredited college or university AND Three years of professional accounting experience 

Position Requirements:

Job candidate for this position will be subject to a criminal background check, educational degree check, and reference checks prior to the extension of a job offer. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Preference will be given to applicants who in addition to meeting the agency specific minimum qualifications possess at least one of the following:

  • Experience reconciling general ledger accounts
  • Experience booking journal entries
  • Experience with federal grants and programs

WORKING CONDITIONS (TRAVEL, HOURS, ENVIRONMENT)

This position is currently designated as a hybrid (part in-office and part remote/Telework) position.  This position is full time (40 hours per week) and may require occasional overtime.  Local periodic travel may be required. 

Physical / Sensory requirements:

Work is principally stationary, but the person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc., and constantly operates a computer and other office equipment.

Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.

Must be able to perform office related duties.

Must be able to operate office equipment.

Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, tenants, and community agencies and other entities that provide services.

Must be able to perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Must be able to perform essential job functions in an environment that will sometimes include increased levels of work-related stress.

Must maintain punctuality and attendance as scheduled.

Bachelor's degree in accounting and two (2) years of professional accounting job-related experience; or two (2) years of experience at the lower level Accountant 2 (FIP021) or equivalent position.
