About the Role

The DBHDD Police Department is seeking a Police Major – Corrections & Forensic Operations to lead and strengthen our corrections and forensic security operations across the state.

If you have successfully led teams, managed complex operations, and are looking to grow into executive-level leadership on a smaller, mission-driven team, we want to hear from you.

We are committed to training, development, and mentorship to support your transition into this role.

Role Overview

The Police Major will provide strategic and operational leadership for Corrections operations and planning within the DBHDD Police Department. This includes oversight of the current Jail Restoration Center (JRC) in Eastman, active participation in planning and development of the new JRC in Augusta, and serving as a key advisor on forensic patient security policies, procedures, and protocols across DBHDD’s five state hospitals.

This role operates at the intersection of law enforcement, behavioral health, and public safety, requiring strong judgment, collaboration, and systems thinking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee Corrections operations and strategic planning for the DBHDD Police Department
  • Provide direction and operational oversight for the Eastman Jail Restoration Center (JRC)
  • Support planning, development, and operational readiness for sites
  • Serve as a subject matter resource for forensic patient security, advising on policies, procedures, and protocols at DBHDD’s state hospitals
  • Partner with executive leadership to ensure alignment between security operations, clinical environments, and regulatory requirements
  • Develop, review, and implement corrections-related policies and operational standards
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and accountability for command staff and managers
  • Support workforce planning, succession planning, and leadership development within Corrections operations
  • Analyze operational risks and recommend proactive solutions
  • Represent the department in internal and external meetings related to corrections and forensic security
  • Travel regularly to JRC locations and state hospitals to maintain visibility, relationships, and operational oversight

This role currently has four (4) direct reports, with plans to expand to six (6):

  • Eastman JRC Behavioral Health & Facilities Manager
  • Captain, Corrections (Eastman)
  • Augusta JRC Behavioral Health & Facilities Manager

  • (Planned) Additional leadership roles supporting the Atlanta region

Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)

  • Bachelor’s Or Master's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Leadership, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams, managing operations, or overseeing complex facilities

  • Ten (10) or more years of progressive law enforcement leadership experience
  • Experience in corrections operations, institutional security, or forensic environments

Candidates who do not meet the preferred education requirements may still be considered if they bring extensive, relevant leadership and operational experience demonstrating readiness for this level of responsibility.

Who Will Be Successful in This Role

You are likely to thrive in this position if you:

  • Are ready to step into executive-level leadership on a growing, mission-driven team
  • Have a strong track record of operational success and people leadership
  • Are comfortable leading through complexity and change
  • Understand the balance between security, accountability, and behavioral health environments
  • Value mentorship, development, and continuous improvement
  • Can operate independently while partnering closely with senior leadership

Why This Role Is Different

  • Growth-focused: We will train, mentor, and develop the selected candidate
  • Meaningful mission: Your work directly supports public safety and behavioral health outcomes
  • Strategic impact: You’ll shape corrections operations statewide, not just manage day-to-day activity
