STATE PROFILE SUMMARY: Under supervision, studies the composition, structure and other physical aspects of the earth. Examine minerals, underground water, waste disposal, land reclamation or other environmental problems to determine physical and chemical properties to ensure quality standards.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under general supervision, perform geological and engineering evaluations of new sources of construction aggregates. Conducts periodic geological investigations to locate origin of detrimental material, evaluate the extent of problems, report findings and make recommendations for corrective action. Maintain up-to-date information on aggregate research, testing procedures and applications. Performs aggregate research as needed to revise specifications and qualify aggregates for the intended uses. Provide aggregate technical services to departmental personnel, consultants, material suppliers and others. Train departmental personnel in recognition and testing of detrimental materials. Perform petrographic analysis of aggregates to determine suitability for use in construction and conformance to specifications. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The selected candidate must meet the advertised minimum qualifications to include State Entry Qualifications as well as Agency Specific Qualifications.

 

STATE ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:   

·         Associates degree in geology, geologic sciences or a related field from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of job-related experience.

 

AGENCY SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Completion of a four-year degree in Geology or a related field from an accredited college or   university.  

·         Knowledge of soils, foundations and earth sciences. 

·         Knowledge of rock and soil types, properties, geological maps and literature relevant to the State of Georgia.

·         Experience reading and interpreting specifications, plans, contract documents, construction and testing manuals, and other resources. 

·         Experience composing and preparing specifications, technical reports and general   correspondence 

·         Knowledge of computer applications necessary to operate engineering-analysis   programs. 

·         Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to production and placement   of materials, including percentages and formulas 

·         Ability to solve analytical problems by choosing appropriately from a variety of   mathematical techniques.

·         Committed to providing quality customer service

  

 

AGENCY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

·         Possession of a Geologist in Training or Professional Geologist license.  

·         Experience preparing engineering and geological reports.  

·         Experience previewing consultant proposals and reports.

Good Employment Standing:

In accordance with the Interview and Selection Process (ISP), an applicant must have no active disciplinary actions to be in good employment standing.  Actions that may disqualify an applicant include letters of reprimand (active for 12 months after issuance date); suspension without pay or disciplinary demotion (active for 12 months from the effective date); Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) and Leave Restriction Plans (active until 12 months after the date of conclusion).  In addition, an employee must have an overall e-Performance rating score of three (3) or higher on their most current evaluation.  Please note that Memorandums of Concern are not considered disqualifying factors.  Human Resources may remove any employee from consideration for selection who is pending a disciplinary action; however, if the action is resolved in the employee’s favor, he or she will be allowed to compete.
