Job Summary:

Under administrative direction, assists in administrating and supervising the North Investigative Unit; directs, manages, supervises, and coordinates activities and operations. Supervise, along with the Regional Field Supervisor in the Unit, personnel assigned to investigate alleged or suspected violations of Federal, state, or local laws to determine if the evidence is sufficient to recommend criminal prosecution; supervise administrative investigations for alleged violations of rules and regulations.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the direction, guidance, and leadership of the regional Unit.

  • Manages Weekly, Monthly, and Annual reports regarding the assigned region’s investigative caseload.

  • Completes bi-annual and annual performance evaluations on assigned personnel.

  • Track and document the regional Unit’s fleet of vehicles for preventive maintenance issues.

  • Collaborates with other authorities on activities such as surveillance, transcription, and research.

  • Develop investigative leads through a complete review of case files.

  • Develop comprehensive investigative plans for each investigation.

  • Interview parents, guardians, or court service workers within specified time limits of referral.

  • Visits various locations to gather information on youth efficiently.

  • Coordinates with local law enforcement agencies to facilitate the progress of investigations professionally.

  • Effectively communicates with the Director of Investigations on investigation progress and advises of significant developments as required.

  • Records all significant investigative activity in case files in a clear, concise, and timely manner.

  • Review case files for all necessary and appropriate documentation and to ensure compliance with established guidelines.

  • Maintains case files according to established guidelines.

  • Conduct internal administrative and criminal investigations when needed.

  • Obtains arrest warrants from appropriate youth or adult courts when needed.

  • Examine records to locate links in the chain of evidence or information.

  • Prepare reports and other correspondence within specified time limits.

  • Draft reports and other correspondence using the proper format, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

  • Research and includes all supporting documentation for reports before submission.

  • Makes proper distribution of all correspondence according to established guidelines.

  • Identifies case issues and evidence needed based on analysis of charges, complaints, or allegations of law violations.

  • Obtains and verifies evidence by interviewing and observing suspects and witnesses or analyzing records.

  • 21. Obtains information related to cases

  • Processes crime scene evidence according to established guidelines.

  • Conduct interviews with principal parties of internal investigations by using appropriate interrogation and investigative techniques.

  • Coordinates polygraph examinations as required. Prepares or assists with preparing investigative reports, as required.

  • 22. State Vehicle Operation and Care

  • Schedules vehicles for preventative maintenance when due according to established guidelines.

  • Performs operator maintenance according to the manufacturer’s specifications and established guidelines.

  • Always maintains personal equipment in a serviceable condition and reports and replaces missing items according to established guidelines.

  • May respond to emergencies, operating emergency equipment in a lawful manner, showing due regard to the safety of other motorists.

  • Operates state vehicles in a safe, lawful manner always.

  • On-Call Status

  • Investigators always remain on ‘On-Call’ status unless they are on approved PTO/Vacation.

  • Investigators always carry their state-issued cell phones to be contacted by DJJ supervisors or other related personnel.

  • Investigators ensure state-assigned vehicles always remain in ‘Ready’ status.

  • Supervision

  • This position supervises all Investigators and staff assigned to the North Region Investigative Unit and supervises personnel in the above-mentioned job duties.

  • This also includes providing direction and guidance to subordinates and completing annual performance evaluations.

  • May be called to fill in for the Director with other duties as needed.

  • Other duties as directed.

  • Sample Technical Competencies:

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making.

  • Ability to use proper and effective interview and interrogation techniques.

  • Knowledge of law enforcement databases and other available sources of information.

  • Knowledge of legal procedures and processes.

  • Knowledge of case management tools, techniques, technology, and software

  • Ability to conduct surveillance, use covert devices, and interview informants.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university, Georgia P.O.S.T. certification, and three (3) years of related experience.
  • Or Georgia P.O.S.T. certification and five (5) years of experience in law enforcement or related field.
  • Or Georgia P.O.S.T. certification and two (2) years of experience required at the lower-level Criminal Investigator 3 (PSP092) or position equivalent. Note: Some positions may require the incumbent to have a valid Class C driver's license.
  • The position requires a Georgia POST certification in Basic Law Enforcement. Georgia Law authorizes this position [OCGA 35-8-2(8) and 40-4A-8] and by the Commissioner of Juvenile Justice to be designated as a Peace Officer while in the course of his/her employment duties with the Department of Juvenile Justice to exercise the power of arrest and to carry weapons to include firearms. This position is required to abide by all Georgia POST requirements regarding training, including the use of deadly force and firearms qualification. This position is full-time.

1. Enforces State of Georgia Criminal statutes and DJJ policy regarding youth supervised by DJJ and staff employed by DJJ.

2. Prepares and executes criminal arrest/search warrants.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Ten or more years (total) of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in police or investigative work in a federal, state, or local law enforcement agency, with three (3) years being in a Supervisory role and a degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Police Science, or a closely related field.

2. Extensive knowledge of criminal case law and working investigations.

3. Must Reside in the North Region of the State of Georgia or near (North of the I-16 corridor or within 60 miles of the Martha K Glaze RYDC) the North Region of the State of Georgia.

Candidate MUST HAVE current and valid certification as a Basic Law Enforcement Peace Officer by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Council.
