Music Woodwinds Faculty Instructor, Governor's Honors Program
The Governor’s Honors Program (GHP is a 4-week residential summer program for gifted and talented high school sophomores and juniors. GHP offers instruction designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders. The instruction GHP provides is legislatively required to be significantly different from what is provided in a typical classroom.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Teach advanced-level woodwind students (e.g., flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone) in a pre-professional, honors-level setting.
Develop and implement rigorous curriculum aligned with program standards and performance expectations.
Conduct:
● Sectionals and chamber rehearsals
● Masterclasses
● Technique and fundamentals classes
● Repertoire coaching sessions
Provide individualized instruction tailored to each student’s ability and goals.
Select appropriate chamber ensemble repertoire for woodwind quintet and saxophone quartet.
Collaborate with the other music area instructors to prepare students for multiple solo recitals, chamber ensemble performances, and large ensemble concerts with short rehearsal cycles.
Collaborate with the other music area instructors to present a comprehensive series of daily classes covering topics relevant for collegiate music students.
Topics of study have included but are not limited to:
● Woodwind quintet history, repertoire, and performance
● Saxophone quartet history, repertoire, and performance, including instruction on each member of the saxophone family
● Orchestral performance practices for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone, along with relevant adjacent members of each instrument family
● Guest artist masterclasses for performance, technique, and other relevant musical topics
● Coursework in non-performance based musical skills
Schedule:
● The program runs from June 14, 2026– July 11, 2026. It is a 4-Week, Summer Residential Assignment at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA (on-campus housing and dining plan are also provided)
● Faculty will provide instruction in the “major” discipline Monday – Saturday, and will provide instruction in an elective area of study Monday-Friday.
● Faculty members are required to attend paid staff orientation and training sessions in advance of the summer program, work collaboratively with discipline specific department staff on an ongoing basis; participate in outside-of-class activities when directed; and other assigned tasks related to the Governor’s Honors Program.
● A virtual training session will be held for new and returning faculty on Saturday, March 28th . Faculty must prepare unit plans and/or a syllabus and course overviews that reflect a rigorous and engaging curriculum. Faculty must be able to maintain accurate records of attendance.
Minimum Training & Experience: Bachelor’s Degree or higher. Minimum of (3) three years successful teaching experience in the specific content area at the college or secondary level. Experience teaching gifted education classes, Advanced Placement, or honors courses OR comparable experience teaching high school age students in a private or out of school environment (e.g., YMCA, private studio, professional ensemble classes) within the applicant’s field of expertise.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Significant experience teaching gifted secondary learners
• Excellent organization skills
• Proven ability to provide a challenging and differentiated instructional experience to diverse learners
• Proven ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities
• Ability to participate in coaching and professional growth opportunities to improve instructional practice and to support others to improve their craft
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• High level of professional integrity
