OUR MISSION
The mission of the Georgia Student Finance Commission is to promote and increase access to education beyond high school for Georgians. To achieve this mission the commission administers state and lottery-funded student financial aid programs including the HOPE Scholarship and HOPE Grant and provides college planning and other educational services to more than 2 million Georgians through GAfutures.org. The commission seeks to improve its own operations and inform policymakers and other stakeholders through analysis, interpretation and publication of information using the extensive data collected in support of its programs.

DESCRIPTION
Linux server support specialist is responsible for installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Linux-based servers within the organization. Ensuring optimal performance, security, and system availability by managing user accounts, monitoring system health, applying updates, creating or managing scripts to move files and resolving technical issues related to the Linux operating system and its applications; often collaborating with other IT teams to support business needs.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- System Administration:
- Installing, configuring, and patching Linux operating systems on servers.
- Managing user accounts, permissions, and access controls.
- Performing system backups and recovery procedures.
- Monitoring system performance and resource utilization.
- Implementing security measures to protect against unauthorized access and data breaches.
- Troubleshooting and Support:
- Diagnosing and resolving technical issues related to Linux servers, including hardware, software, and network connectivity problems.
- Analyzing system logs to identify potential issues proactively.
- Providing technical support to users experiencing Linux-related problems.
- Performance Optimization:
- Tuning system parameters to optimize server performance and resource allocation.
- Implementing load balancing and high availability strategies.
- Scripting and Automation:
- Writing shell scripts to automate repetitive tasks and streamline system management.
- Utilizing configuration management tools to maintain consistency across servers.
- Collaboration and Documentation:
- Working with other IT teams to integrate Linux servers with existing infrastructure.
- Maintaining detailed documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The following standards express the minimum background of education and experience as evidence of an applicant’s ability to qualify for this class title. Any combination of education and experience, if evaluated as equivalent, may qualify an applicant for a position within this class.
- Associate Degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or similar discipline from an accredited college or university AND Two years of relevant work experience as a network engineer or administrator OR Four years at the lower-level Network Engineer 1 (ITP100).
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in Linux system administration concepts (file systems, user management, permissions, network configuration).
- Required to be proficient in Linux command line interface (CLI), PERL and shell scripting (Bash).
- Knowledge of common Linux distributions (Red Hat, Oracle Linux, Amazon Linux 2, Amazon 2023).
- Experience with system monitoring tools (CheckMk,Nagios).
- Basic understanding of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, firewall configuration).
- Problem-solving and analytical skills to troubleshoot complex technical issues.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related scientific or technical degree; or equivalent experience.
- Preferred experience in Python, Debian and Powershell
