POSITION:                    Director of Counseling/Student Support Services

REPORTS TO:             Vice President for Student Affairs

SALARY RANGE:       Mid to Upper $70’s, depending on qualifications and experience

EFFECTIVE:                This position is available now

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director of Counseling/Student Support Services will promote campus mental health awareness and wellness through direct counseling, consultation, intervention, and training. Will lead campus student wellness efforts and participate in student development and success initiatives as needed. Is also responsible for providing leadership and oversight to the areas which provide student support activities and resources.

 

Major Duties:

Director of Counseling:

·       Provides short-term individual counseling to students to assist in resolving personal problems;

·       Conducts intakes, evaluations, and assessments for individual counseling sessions with students;

·       Responsible for treatment plan development, case notes, and care coordination in individual and groups settings;

·      Establishes and maintains effective referral relationships with counselors, rehabilitation facilities, in-and-out patient         mental health facilities, and crisis centers; and refers students to appropriate community resources as needed;

·      Refers to area mental health professionals as appropriate. Develops and presents workshops and seminars on mental health issues, academic success, etc.;

·       Provides crisis intervention and support to students, faculty, and staff;

·       Conducts group counseling sessions on a variety of topics each semester;

·       Develops and presents relevant wellness, mental health issues, and/or student success seminars on campus;

·       Creates and dispenses mental health information to students and campus community;

·       Provides training to appropriate campus organizations, faculty, and staff regarding relevant mental health issues of college students;

·       Maintains confidentiality of student records and official business unless legally required to disclose;

·       Conducts regular evaluation of services provided and adjusts as needed;

·       Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by attending professional development training, workshops, seminars, and conferences, and by reading professional literature;

·       Maintains up-to-date with policies, procedures, and state or federal laws that may impact student mental health issues;

·       Serves on the Behavioral Intervention Team, and serves as Manager for Target X retention system.

 

Student Support Services:

·    Oversees student programs and services to include but not limited to: Student Government Associations, Accessibility Services, Special Populations, and Career Services;

·    Monitors the activities of personnel to ensure compliance with TCSG policy manual and LTC Student Affairs department procedures;

·    Coordinates daily workflow and handles complex departmental administrative issues;

·    Evaluates direct reports at scheduled intervals;

·    Coordinates, tracks, reports, and uses retention data research and analysis (by using Banner, KMS, and other resources) to identify student achievement and retention obstacles.  Designs, coordinates, and targets new intervention services, programs, and initiatives focused on student persistence and retention;

·    Other work-related duties as assigned by Supervisor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

·       A Master’s Degree in counseling, social work, clinical mental health, or closely related occupational field from a regionally accredited College or University;

·       A current Georgia license as one of the following: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC); Clinical Social Worker; Master Social Worker (MSW); Associate Professional Counselor (APC); or Marriage and Family Therapist.

 

COMPETENCIES:

·       Knowledge of privacy practices; including HIPAA and FERPA in the postsecondary educational environment;

·       Knowledge and adherence to professional ethics established by the American Counseling Association; National Board of Certified Counselors, etc.;

·       Knowledge of counseling techniques and professional protocols;

·       Effective skill in providing mental health counseling, assessment, and referral;

·       Effective leadership skills for supervising subordinate employees;

·       Skills and knowledge in budgeting and fiscal management;

·       Knowledge of the mission of postsecondary technical education;

·       Knowledge of community and college resources for mental health;

·       Skill to work cooperatively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff;

·       Effective decision-making and problem-solving skills;

·       Proficiency in the operation of computers and job-related software programs;

·       Skill in interpersonal relations and dealing with the public.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: (In addition to minimum qualifications & competencies):

One year of counseling experience, preferably in a post-secondary educational environment.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is typically performed while sitting as a desk or table, or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking.  Occasionally lifts light objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. Work is typically performed in an office environment.
