Honors Fellowship - Solicitor General

The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers, and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General.  The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units and an operations division.  The position filled through this announcement will serve in the Solicitor General Unit.

As the chief appellate litigator for the State of Georgia, the Solicitor General oversees the State’s appellate litigation, with particular focus on the United States Supreme Court, the Georgia Supreme Court, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. The Office of the Solicitor General directly handles cases of exceptional complexity and public importance.  The Office also supervises the State’s amicus practice, regularly filing multistate amicus briefs in the Supreme Court and the federal courts of appeals, oversees high-stakes trial litigation, and advises the Attorney General on legal issues.

The Georgia Solicitor General seeks to hire two Honors Fellows, starting Fall 2025. Lawyers and graduating law students interested in constitutional litigation, appellate practice, and public service are encouraged to apply. Honors Fellowship positions involve significant litigation responsibility, including managing cases, drafting briefs, and presenting oral argument. 

Opportunities & Responsibilities

The Honors Fellowship offers talented junior attorneys the opportunity to gain substantive experience unparalleled in private practice. Honors Fellows participate in all aspects of the Office’s work.  Responsibilities increase based on experience, but successful applicants can expect to:

·      Draft and file briefs in the United States Supreme Court, the Georgia Supreme Court, the Eleventh Circuit, and other courts.

·      Present oral argument in various appellate courts.

·      Prepare amicus briefs on behalf of multistate amicus coalitions.

·      Review draft appellate briefs prepared by other units of the Attorney General’s office and participate in moots to prepare attorneys for oral argument.

·      Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda for the Attorney General, Solicitor General, and other senior staff.

Qualifications

Required:

  •  Graduation from an accredited law school
  •               Member of the Georgia Bar or bar pending  
  •   Demonstrated excellence in legal analysis, brief writing and oral communication

Preferred:

  •     Clerkship experience preferred but not required
