Georgia Department of Public Health is seeking an Environmental Health Director for North Central Health District.  With a district office located in Macon, Georgia, the North Central Health District includes 13 counties in central Georgia serving a population of over 550,000 residents living in urban, suburban, and rural areas.

The Environmental Health Director manages the comprehensive district-wide environmental public health program of regulatory review and enforcement. The Director is the leader of a high-performing team of approximately 50 professional and administrative staff working at 13 county health departments and the District Office and often works in the field to assist training new environmental health specialists.


 

Job Responsibilities:

Manages a comprehensive district wide public health environmental health program of regulatory review and enforcement in the area of environmental health. Directs subordinate staff.

 

  1. Directs subordinate EH staff. Creates and maintains a high performance environment characterized by positive leadership and a strong team orientation
  1. Manages human resource and employee relations functions.
  2. Develops short-term (one year) and long-term (five year) goals and strategies for the district environmental health program.
  3. Directs environmental health programs for the district that provide technical assistance and expertise to county EHS, government agencies, corporations, contractors and the general public.
  4. Directs the preparation and administration of the district environmental health program budget and the coordination of funding sources.
  5. Directs the recommendation, preparation and/or drafting of proposed laws, regulations and rules consistent with administrative procedures.
  6. Directs the evaluation of technical documents, environmental and public health issues, and facilities using sound engineering and scientific principles.
  7. Provides technical expertise and testimony regarding environmental health issues in the community.
  8. Interacts with all levels of local, state and federal governments/agencies and officials in a way that promotes respect, encourages cooperation and contributes to excellent performance.
  9. Maintain a consistent, high quality, customer focused orientation when conducting business and providing services or products to clients, general public and other internal/external customers.
  10. Knowledge of EH Emergency Response plan and ESF 8 responsibilities, and Incident Command Structure.
  11. Maintains knowledge of current policies, laws, trends, and developments in the field of environmental health and applies pertinent new knowledge to performance of other responsibilities.
  12. Serves as the liaison to the DPH-EH office.


 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, which included the completion of 27 semester hours (or 40 quarter hours) in laboratory science (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics, etc.) and four (4) years of full-time professional level experience equivalent to a PH Envir Compl Specialist 4 (RCP123), which includes two (2) years in a lead worker, team leader, or supervisory role; or three (3) years as a County Mgr. PH Environ Hlth (RCM060) or position equivalent.

 

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Health, Public Health or related field;
  • Current registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Sanitarian by the National Environmental Health Association or an equivalent recognized credentialing board.
  • Training: Fundamentals of the Georgia PMP;
  • Completion of NIMS courses 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800;
  • Completion of Manager or Leadership Development program.
