POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of the Investigations Area Supervisor, the Criminal Investigator I conducts criminal, civil, and/or administrative investigations related to the authority granted to the Office of the Georgia Secretary of State.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform work of considerable difficulty in conducting criminal and administrative investigations for the Office of the Secretary of State.
  • Support enforcement efforts of the Office of the Secretary of State as well as the various boards which operate in collaboration with the Office of the Georgia Secretary of State.
  • Enforce Georgia statutes/policies and applicable rules of the boards.
  • Investigate alleged or suspected violations of Federal, State, or local laws/rules and regulations.
  • Conduct thorough and comprehensive investigations and prepare reports upon conclusion.
  • Prepare and submit reports that detail investigative findings and proposed responses and/or resolutions.
  • Examine records in order to locate links in chain of evidence or information.
  • Identify case issues and evidence needed based on analysis of charges, complaints, or allegations of violations.
  • Receive complaints and intelligence pertaining to possible violations of criminal and administrative statues, rules, and regulations under the authority or enforcement powers of the Secretary of State.
  • Cooperate and collaborate with other state, local, and federal agencies on appropriate cases.
  • Collaborate with other authorities on activities such as surveillance and research.
  • Obtain and verify evidence by interviewing and observing suspects and witnesses or by analyzing records.
  • Conduct background investigations.
  • Provide testimony in criminal, administrative, and civil proceedings.
  • Maintain mandatory P.O.S.T. in-service training requirements for certification.
  • Statewide travel is required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Ability to use legal and appropriate use of force in confrontational situations.
  • Ability to prepare clear concise reports in appropriate styles and formats.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making.
  • Ability to use all assigned equipment appropriately and effectively.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to use proper and effective interviewing techniques.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement databases and other available sources of information.
  • Knowledge of legal procedures and processes.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and agency laws, policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Knowledge of general investigative techniques.
  • Ability to effect arrests.
  • Knowledge of court and administrative proceedings.
  • Ability to conduct surveillance, use covert devices, and interview individuals.
  • Knowledge of case management tools, techniques, technology, and software.
  • Ability to recognize trends in criminal activity/behavior.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task, prioritize and manage large numbers of cases.

SUPERVISION REQUIREMENT:  None required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Three (3) years in law enforcement or related field.  Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) (PBLE) certification in the state of Georgia is required.  A valid driver’s license is required. Must be age 21 or older and a United States citizen, and possess a strong moral character

Note: Employment in this position is contingent upon the passing and certification of the required medical and physical examination process.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:  Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.

Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university and must meet the prerequisites and complete the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program certification; or two (2) years of experience in law enforcement or related field and Georgia P.O.S.T. certification. Note: Some positions may require the incumbent to have a valid Class C driver's license.
