JOB SUMMARY
Serves as a Compliance Review Archaeologist. Reviews projects for National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility of, and effects, to archaeological resources for Section 106 compliance and similar/related state and federal laws.
Provides interagency liaison support. Assists in resolving adverse effects to archaeological resources, including negotiating and reviewing agreement and mitigation documents. Provides technical assistance, provides information to the public, and conducts meetings and site visits as necessary. The position also advises the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) Environmental Review Program Manager, the HPD Office Director(s) and Division Director, serves as liaison with Archaeology Compliance Program partners, and advises other federal, state, Tribal, and Department of Community Affairs (DCA) officials on projects and related issues. Supports other HPD program areas as necessary. Supports and participates in special projects as necessary.
PRIMARY DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Assisting in the administration of HPD duties;
- Advising agencies on legal responsibilities under Federal and State preservation laws;
- Coordinating review of federal and state agency projects concerning archaeological resources as required by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA);
- Reviewing project documents which have been submitted by federal or state agencies or their agents;
- Identifying federal/state compliance responsibilities from information provided by agencies on proposed projects;
- Formulating and providing written recommendations to agencies establishing HPD’s opinion of archaeological and cultural resource eligibility for the NRHP and any effects that may occur to archaeological resources as a result of project implementation;
- Responding to inquiries and providing guidance, clarification, and recommendations concerning historic preservation compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA and similar federal and state laws;
- Assisting federal and state agencies in efforts to resolve complex problems related to the protection and preservation of archaeological resources and associated archaeological materials;
- Providing technical assistance to federal and state agencies on various types of agreement documents regarding historic preservation compliance;
- Consulting with federally recognized Native American Tribes in regard to project components, including agreement documents and compliance with historic preservation laws;
- Utilizing the Georgia Natural, Archaeological, Historic Resources GIS database to conduct background research on archaeological sites, property location maps, along with a broad knowledge of Georgia precontact and historic time periods to determine need to conduct archaeological surveys and to evaluate archaeological resources for significance;
- Supporting other HPD program areas and participating in special projects as necessary

- Familiarity with and skill to comprehend and apply complex theoretical considerations and new developments in the technical literature of archaeology and related scientific disciplines
- Ability to adapt to and respond effectively to frequent interruptions, distractions, and requests for information.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology, Cultural Resource Management, Historic Preservation, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university AND One year of experience in a directly related field OR Two years of experience required at the lower-level Curator/Preservationist 2 (NRP031) or position equivalent.
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference may be given to applicants with a Master’s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology or a related field and two
(2) or more of the following:
- Meets the Secretary of Interior’s Archaeology Professional Qualifications
- Completion of an Archaeological Field School
- Familiarity with Section 106 and/or federal preservation laws concerning archaeology
- Experience with evaluating archaeological resources for eligibility for listing in the NRHP
- Experience completing archaeological reports and projects such as archaeological resource surveys, Section 106 reports
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with other cultural resource professionals as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with the general public
WORKING CONDITIONS (TRAVEL, HOURS, ENVIRONMENT)
This position is currently designated as a hybrid (part in-office and part remote/Telework) position. This position is full-time (40 hours per week) and may require occasional overtime. Local periodic travel may be required.
PHYSICAL / SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Work is principally stationary, but the person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc., and constantly operates a computer and other office equipment.
Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.

Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, tenants, and community agencies and other entities that provide services.
