POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Metrology laboratory is located in Tifton, Georgia, and is a part of the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s Laboratory Division.
The Metrology laboratory is responsible for the testing and calibration of weight kits, large-scale weights, weight carts, and volume provers for the State of Georgia and external companies.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will manage testing and calibration activities on a variety of materials to determine compliance with legal standards.
Develops analytical procedures or standards for compliance with established regulations.
Directs subordinate supervisors and staff.
· Manages the overall day-to-day operation of the Metrology Laboratory
· Oversee all testing and calibration procedures
· Oversee the scheduling of customers for calibration activities
· Enforces and maintains laboratory safety policy
· Responsible for achieving and maintaining NIST accreditation
· Maintains NIST certifications in mass and volume metrology
· Maintains authorizations to sign calibration certificates
· Interview, hires, directs, trains, evaluates the performance of, and when necessary, disciplines and discharges laboratory employees
· Maintains knowledge and skill in the latest methodology, techniques, proficiency testing, and instrumentation for the Metrology laboratory
· Supervises and coordinates all laboratory maintenance
· Directs subordinate staff
· Performs laboratory maintenance.
· Performs routine and non-routine analysis.
· Performs laboratory administrative duties.

Physical Demands:
· Standing for long periods
· Intermittent periods of walking
· Must be able to lift 50lb. boxes
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university AND minimum of three years’ experience at a lower-level Chemical/Material Analyst or position equivalent
· Communicate effectively with staff
· Has current NIST certifications in mass and volume metrology
· Current signatory under NIST for metrology calibration certificates
· Successful performance on Metrology round-robin check samples
· Experience with precision analytical instruments, maintenance, and troubleshooting
· Working knowledge of NIST and ISO 17025 standards
