Atlanta Judicial Circuit – Assistant Public Defender IV


The Atlanta Judicial Circuit Public Defender Office seeks to hire an Assistant Public Defender IV.  Applicants must meet the qualifications and have the necessary skills to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position. This Assistant Public Defender will represent clients in court at various stages of cases, including arraignments, preliminary and pretrial hearings, probation and sentencing, or any related courtroom proceedings. The candidate chosen will be responsible for preparing and presenting cases for trial and entering pleas, conducting legal research, preparing and presenting complex documents, pleading compilation, orders, etc.   Applicants must be a current member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia. A strong commitment to indigent defense is also required.

Description of Duties: The Assistant Public Defender IV manages a demanding caseload, conducts thorough legal research, and prepares and presents cases in court. This role requires ensuring that clients receive effective representation at all stages of the legal process. In addition to direct client representation, this position may supervise and provide guidance to subordinate staff engaged in criminal defense work. The Assistant Public Defender IV advises and counsels other attorneys on case management practices and litigation strategies. This role requires the ability to represent clients in the most serious, legally complex, and high-profile cases assigned to the office, while maintaining the highest standards of professional responsibility. Performs other related duties as required.

Juris Doctorate in a related area from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity and three (3) years of relevant legal experience; or three (3) years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 3 (LEP022).
