Piedmont Judicial Circuit – Assistant Public Defender IV


The Piedmont Judicial Circuit Public Defender’s Office is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Assistant Public Defender IV in Barrow County. Applicants must meet the qualifications and have the necessary skills to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position. Primary duties include representing indigent clients in all phases of criminal proceedings, including arraignment, pretrial hearings, trial preparation, plea negotiations, trial, and sentencing.  This position involves extensive courtroom and trial representation. Applicants must be a current member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.  A strong commitment to indigent defense is also required.

Description of Duties: The Assistant Public Defender IV provides competent and zealous legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients. This position involves advanced, senior-level legal work, including handling complex and high-profile felony cases, as well as the most serious and significant matters assigned to the office. The Assistant Public Defender IV is responsible for managing a demanding caseload, conducting legal research, preparing and presenting cases in court, and ensuring clients receive effective representation at all stages of the legal process. While primarily focused on complex cases, this position may also provide guidance or assistance on cases of routine complexity as needed. Performs other related duties as required.

Juris Doctorate in a related area from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity and three (3) years of relevant legal experience; or three (3) years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 3 (LEP022).
