Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit – Assistant Public Defender IV


The Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit is seeking to hire an Assistant Public Defender IV in Muscogee County.   Applicants must meet the qualifications and have the necessary skills to perform the job duties and responsibilities for the position.  The Assistant Public Defender will be responsible for preparing and presenting cases for trial and entering pleas, conducting legal research, preparing and presenting complex documents, pleading compilation, orders, etc.  Additional duties include managing staff attorneys and administrative staff as well as representing indigent clients with criminal case(s) in Superior Court. Applicants must demonstrate a mastery of litigation and possess extensive jury trial experience as the lead counsel in felony cases. A strong commitment to indigent defense is required. Applicants must be in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.

Description of Duties: The Assistant Public Defender IV will be responsible for providing competent and zealous legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients.  The candidate holding this position should be prepared to direct subordinate staff engaged in criminal defense; advise and counsel other attorneys as to the case management practices of handling their assigned cases; and represent clients in cases including the most serious, legal complex, high-profile and/or significant cases assigned to the office.  Performs other related duties as required.

Juris Doctorate in a related area from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity and three (3) years of relevant legal experience; or three (3) years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 3 (LEP022).
