Assistant Attorney General - Business and Finance
The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers, and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General. The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units, and an operations division. The position filled through this announcement will serve in the Business and Finance Section of the Commercial Transactions and Litigation Division.
Job Summary
Attorneys in this section serve as counsel for matters involving the business, financial, and property interests of the state government, including bankruptcy. The attorney will be responsible for representing the state in Chapter 7, 11, 12, and 13 bankruptcies across the state and occasionally out of state, including multistate bankruptcies. While the workload would be primarily bankruptcy-focused, there is an opportunity for the attorney to participate in general business litigation, including breach-of-contract actions, state procurements, the Hospital Acquisition Act, bond proceedings and Georgia Lottery Prize denials. Some occasional travel may be required in this position.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Litigate cases:
o Appears in state and federal courts to try cases, argue motions and appeal.
o Research and prepare pleadings, motions, and briefs.
o Works with expert witnesses.
o Participates in settlement negotiations.
o Prepares discovery requests and responses.
o Provides legal advice and/or representation to clients/agencies, drafts memoranda of advice.
o Research pertinent legal issues; keeps abreast of recent legal developments.
o participates in multistate working groups.
o Reviews sign-on opportunities for letters, comments, and briefs.
o Drafts formal opinions in response to legal questions.
o Responds to inquiries from citizens, legislators, and judges.
o Attends continuing legal education seminars as required; makes presentations at same time
o Travel, as required by the position (typically not much travel is required)
o Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited law school and a member of the Georgia Bar
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who possess one or more of the items below:
- Experience in Chapter 7, 11, and 13 Bankruptcy proceedings
- Litigation experience or interest
- Strong research and writing skills
- Attorney should be able to assume primary responsibility for matters and to work independently.
