POSITION OVERVIEW:

The GDA's Meat Inspection Section governs and regulates the statutes on meat slaughter and processing plants to assure a safe, wholesome, and properly labeled meat supply for consumers.

1.      Meat Inspection regulates red meat slaughter & processing and performs daily inspections of state, federal, and custom-exempt facilities.

2.      The Meat Inspection Program provides compliance oversight of meat products in commerce and the slaughtering and processing of farm-raised commercial non-amenable species.

 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

This position is assigned to the following county: TWIGGS.

Applicants must reside in counties listed for District 6, the surrounding area, or be willing to relocate.

*District 6 currently encompasses the following counties:

6.      Crawford

7.      Bibb

8.      Peach

9.      Macon

10.  Dooly

11.  Houston

12.  Pulaski

13.  Bleckley

16.  Johnson

17.  Washington

18.  Jefferson

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

·        The duties of this position are performed at various establishments as necessary to provide district-wide relief coverage when inspection personnel are on a leave of absence; they may also provide state-wide relief coverage if needed.

·        The schedule of this position may change without warning based on the immediate needs of the program.

·        Responsibilities may entail overnight travel and travel outside of the district or state to complete the necessary training.

The duties of this position include:

·        Provides antemortem and post-mortem inspections at livestock slaughter establishments.

·        Provides re-inspection of livestock and poultry products.

·        Perform inspections of facilities to assure regulatory compliance.

·        Discuss findings and establish coverage assignments with the district.

·        Supervisor and may act as District Supervisor in emergencies.

Other duties as assigned.

NOTE:

1.      The selected candidate must complete USDA Inspection Methods training at the first available opportunity after being hired.

3.      This will help determine if you meet the qualifications for this position based on your education.

4.      Failure to submit a transcript may result in not being eligible for this specific position if qualifying based on education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the Minimum Qualifications, possess knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

1.      State or Federal Meat Inspection or Food Inspection experience.

2.      Completion of a bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or university in Animal Science, Environmental Science, Biology, or a closely related field; and

3.      Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

1.      As a condition of continued employment, the selected candidate must complete and pass all required USDA Inspection Methods training and tests at the first available opportunity after being hired.

2.      Candidates who fail the Inspection Methods exam on their first attempt may be eligible for one (1) additional retest, at the GMIS Director’s discretion.

High school diploma/GED and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment; or two (2) years of college, which included 12 semester hours or 20 quarter hours in chemistry or life sciences and two (2) years of experience in a directly job-related area; or two (2) years of experience required at the lower level Agriculture Inspector 2 (RCT041) or position equivalent.
