Job Summary:

The Activity Therapist is responsible for planning, directing and coordinating therapeutic recreation programs that promote the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being of participants. This role is non-clinical, focusing on engagement and enrichment. The therapist works with youth groups within a secure facility setting.

 

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, and conduct group and individual activities (e.g., arts and crafts, games, music, fitness, social events, educational sessions).

  • Tailor programs to meet the diverse interests, needs, and capabilities of youth.

  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment that encourages participation and engagement.

  • Collaborate with other team members to develop a monthly or weekly activity calendar.

  • Monitor and document participant involvement and responses to activities.

  • Assist with special events and holiday celebrations.

  • Maintain activity supplies and equipment, ensuring safety and cleanliness.

  • Communicate effectively with participants and staff.

  • Promote a culture of wellness and support youth.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a therapeutic recreation or related therapeutic discipline from an accredited college or university AND One year of related experience 

  • OR One year of experience at the lower-level Activity Therapist 1 (HCP060) or position equivalent.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Psychology, Human Services, or related field preferred. 

  • Experience in recreational programming or group facilitation preferred. 

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. 

  • Ability to motivate and engage individuals of varying ability levels.
