Accountant 1
The Accountant I performs professional accounting work in support of the financial operations of the Georgia Department of Labor. This position is responsible for assisting with general ledger maintenance, financial reporting, reconciliations, and compliance with state and federal regulations. The Accountant I ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial transactions and records while supporting internal controls and established accounting procedures.
The position is located at 148 Andrew Young International Blvd. NE, Atlanta, Georgia, 30303.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Prepare, review, and process financial transactions including invoices, journal entries, and receipts.
Assist in maintaining and reconciling general ledger accounts.
Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial data.
Compile financial data for preparation of routine financial reports and statements.
Maintain accurate and organized financial records in compliance with state policies and retention guidelines.
Monitor expenditures and assist in tracking budgets to ensure compliance with approved allocations.
Ensure adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards, and state accounting policies.
Assist in preparing documentation for audits and respond to auditor inquiries.
Identify discrepancies and recommend corrective actions to supervisors.
Utilize state financial management systems and accounting software to enter and retrieve financial data.
Provide support to internal departments regarding financial procedures and documentation requirements.
Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance accounting knowledge and skills.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic accounting principles and practices.
Knowledge of GAAP and governmental accounting principles (GASB).
Knowledge of state financial systems, fund accounting, and budget processes.
Ability to analyze complex financial data and prepare detailed reports.
Strong understanding of internal controls and compliance requirements.
Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
Ability to interpret statutes, regulations, and policy guidance.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet established deadlines.
Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Internship or work experience in accounting or finance.
Coursework in governmental accounting.
Experience with enterprise financial systems (e.g., Workday, Peoplesoft)
Experience in grant accounting or federal fund management.
Experience supporting audits in a governmental setting.
