About The Criminal Investigator I

Under general supervision, the Criminal Investigator trains to investigate alleged or suspected violations of Federal, State, or local laws, rules, and regulations to determine if evidence is sufficient to recommend prosecution or to report findings to the appropriate jurisdictional authority for their action. Incumbents in this job are by law considered to be Peace Officers and therefore must meet the standards for this job prescribed by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council (POST).

 

Core duties to include but are not limited to:

·         Conducting criminal and/or administrative investigations to obtain evidence of reported fraud, abuse, or violation of rules, regulations, or statutes, or locate missing persons.

·         Enforcing alcohol and tobacco laws and regulations, and related work.

·         Obtaining and executing arrest and search warrants.

·         Conducting detailed alcohol and tobacco license investigations.

·         Conducting detailed investigative reviews of financial and business documents to identify fraud and determine compliance with alcohol and tobacco licensing requirements.

·         Attending advanced law enforcement and investigative training.

·         Conducting surveillance operations.

·         Conducting criminal and administrative interviews and interrogations.

·         Recruitment of underage operatives for alcohol and tobacco compliance investigations.

·         Conducting monthly alcohol and/or tobacco compliance investigations in assigned territory.

·         Performing detailed inspections of licensed premises to determine compliance with related laws and regulations.

·         Conducting investigations into complaints of violations of related laws and regulations.

·         Providing assistance to other state, federal, or local law enforcement when needed.

·         Serving in undercover assignments. (Must be willing to conduct covert and overt law enforcement activities in potentially dangerous and/or adult themed environments).

·         DOR Special Agents are assigned to GEMA/HS Emergency Support Function (ESF) 13 and are subject to deployment detachments in support of state law enforcement operations.

·         Travelling to counties within assigned territory or throughout the state as necessary.

·         Occasional overnight travel is required.

 

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university AND must meet the prerequisites and complete the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program certification

 

OR

 

Two years of experience in law enforcement or related field AND Georgia P.O.S.T. certification.

 

Note: Some positions may require incumbent to have a valid Class C driver's license.

 

 

·         Priority Consideration will be given to applicants currently working in a law enforcement position with two consecutive years of work experience AND active PBLE Certification (certification number required)

·         POSITION SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS: Active P.O.S.T Basic Law Enforcement Certification in good standing.  Candidates selected must undergo physical and psychological evaluations and a polygraph test, and have a minimum vision of 20/60 corrected to 20/40 in each eye.

·         NECESSARY LEGAL REQUIREMENTS: Please note this job requires an extensive background check. Selected candidates are subject to mandatory pre-employment drug screening. Under the provisions of State Personnel Board Rule 9, these positions are subject to random drug screenings for continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications

·         Two or more consecutive years of experience conducting law enforcement investigations as a police officer, detective, deputy or above

·         Knowledge of Georgia laws and regulations related to alcohol and tobacco as defined and described in O.C.G.A. Titles 3 and 48, as well as knowledge of local ordinances regulating alcohol licensing.
