OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. This is a Part-time position that can't exceed more than 29 hours weekly.

The position is ineligible for benefits.

 

 

Applicant must reside in the following Counties or be willing to relocate:

·       CHATHAM

·       BRYAN

·       EFFINGHAM

·       GLYNN

·       LIBERTY

·       MCINTOSH

 

Job Summary: Under Direct Supervision

·       This is a seasonal position, working from approximately June to mid-December.

·       Deploy approved monitoring traps for Yellow-Legged Hornet Eradication

or   Enters monitoring trap information into Plant Protection’s Survey 123 software (or other approved software)

o   Checks monitoring traps as directed by supervisor, approximately once per week, from June until mid-December. 

o   Changes the bait/lure each time the monitoring trap is checked or as directed.

o   Re-deploys if the original trap is damaged, missing, or otherwise needs replacement.

o   Enter the correct information into Survey 123 when checking monitoring traps.

o   Notifies supervisor when yellow-legged hornets are found in a monitoring trap.

o   Yellow-Legged Hornet Trapper does not disclose the location of any traps to non-departmental personnel.

·       May assist other department personnel in nest location activities.

 

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

1.      High School Diploma (or GED or equivalent),

2.      Valid Driver’s License

3.      Ability to operate a smart phone

 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

·       Completion of the Journeyman level of a master beekeeper program (see https://bees.caes.uga.edu/georgia-master-beekeeper-program/master-beekeepers.html). These programs are typically offered by land grant universities (UGA, UF, Auburn, NCSU, etc.)

·       Master Gardener (see https://extension.uga.edu/programs-services/georgia-master-gardener-extension-volunteer-program.html). These programs are also typically offered by land grant universities.

·       Bachelor of Science in entomology, zoology, or a related field

·       Documented experience working in Plant Protection or related agency (UGA extension, USDA APHIS PPQ, Forestry Commission, etc.)

    •  
      • Familiar with insect identification (i.e. Master Gardener, etc.) or beekeeping experience 
      • Valid driver’s license
      • Ability to use a smartphone and apps.
      • Bachelor’s degree in animal science or related field

 

 

Physical Demands:

While unlikely, there is a possibility of getting stung (yellowjacket, wasp, etc.) when checking traps. Incumbents must work outdoors from June to December in varied terrain. Intermittent periods of walking, hanging traps from trees, and driving. Must be able to hang monitoring traps 4 to 6 feet off the ground.

 

·       Must provide reasonable driving accommodation. 

·       Work mileage will be reimbursed at the federal rate.

 

 

NOTE: The Georgia Department of Agriculture conducts background checks on all final candidates. The hiring of applicants is contingent upon satisfactory employment verification results, background, criminal records investigations, and motor vehicle reports.
