OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. We are seeking full-time APRN (Physician Extender 2) for our New Allen Unit, at Central State Hospital, Milledgeville, GA.

Our Mission is to provide comprehensive competency restoration services in an efficient manner to individuals who are experiencing mental illness and have been found incompetent to stand trial.

The APRN (Physician Extender 2) would be part of the Medical Executive team at Central State Hospital and would report to Clinical Director at CSH.

Job Description:

    • Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, and laboratory
    • Develops comprehensive plans of care
    • Examines clients to obtain information about their physical condition
    • Instructs and counsels clients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.
    • Interprets diagnostic test results for deviations from normal
    • Males tentative diagnoses and decisions about management and treatment of clients
    • Obtains compiles and records client medical data, including health history, progress notes and results of physical examination 
    • Performs therapeutic procedures, such as injections, immunizations, suturing and  wound care and infection management
    • Prescribes therapy or medication with physician approval
    • Visits and observes clients on hospital rounds or house calls, updating charts, ordering therapy, and reporting back to physician.

*Additional Information - Selected applicant must meet the following standards:

 

1.     Must pass a pre-employment background check (which includes criminal records check, driver's history, and verification of work history) and a post-hire federal background investigation.

2.     Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test and will be placed in the pool for the State Random Drug Testing Program.

3.     Eligible to work in the U.S.

4.     Able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

**High School and College Degrees Must Be From an Accredited Institution** 

Master's degree in respective nursing field from an accredited college or university AND Four years of experience in a related area AND current license to practice as APRN in Georgia in the specialty area (Psychiatric specialty area requires a minimum of Four years mental health experience. Medical specialty area requires a minimum of Six years mental health experience) OR Bachelor's degree in physician assistant studies from an accredited college or university AND Six years of general medicine experience OR Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university AND completion of a physician assistant training program of at least Twenty-Four months certified by the Accreditation Review Commission of PA, ARC-PA AND certification to practice as a Physician Assistant by the Composite State Board of Medical Examiners (or eligibility to obtain within One year) AND Four years of experience in a related area.
