OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 Join the State of Georgia and help lead agencies through a transformation in adopting best practices in Risk Management.

 The Loss Control and Safety Officer will monitor and evaluate comprehensive safety and loss control programs for the State of Georgia, making recommendations to customer agencies for improvements in their programs. This position also serves as the Risk Management safety and loss control expert.

 Job Responsibilities:

 Responsibilities include analyzing high risk areas and trends to quantify exposure to loss, applying knowledge of industry best practices, trends, and legislative issues in order to develop and administer effective and efficient safety and loss control programs such as accident prevention, safety training, emergency preparedness, and loss preventions.

 Additionally, the Loss Control and Safety Officer will develop, interpret, review and revise safety and loss control policies, procedures and standards, and provide consultation and advice to state entities in identifying risk exposure and reducing losses to employees, property, and finances.

 This position develops, implements, and evaluates customer education and training programs and collaborates with the risk management leadership team to ensure that safety and loss control issues are managed consistently across programs.

This position may require occasional travel.

Completion of a pre-employment background check is required.

 

DOAS participates in a hybrid work environment and

Telework is encouraged with some days in the office required.

MINIMUM ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS: 

Master's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university AND Two years of related experience

 OR Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university AND Four years of related experience

 OR Associate's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university AND Five years of experience, Two years of which in a position directly related to the area of assignment

 OR Two years of experience required at the lower-level Compliance Specialist 2 (RCP061) or position equivalent. Note: Some positions may require a certification or licensure.

  Note: Some positions may require a valid driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following items below.  PLEASE CLEARLY INDICATE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THESE QUALIFICATIONS ON YOUR RESUME.   

§  Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or an Associate Safety Professional (ASP)

 

§  Member of the American Society of Safety Professionals and/or the American Industrial Hygiene Association

 

§  Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and/or Associate in Risk Management for Public Entities (ARM-P) from the American Institute for CPCU and the Insurance Institute of America.
