OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. GED/HiSet Instructor, Adult Education-Part Time

Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Program Director of Adult Education, the part-time instructor provides instruction for High School Equivalency (HSE) Tests (i.e., GED and HiSET) in the academic areas of mathematics, language arts/reading, science, and social studies.

Essential Functions:
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

•    Plan and teach HSE prep and adult basic education classes with standards-based lessons in math, language arts/reading, science, social studies aligned to the individualized learning needs of students. Instructor is responsible for class retention efforts and for demonstrating consistent evidence of student learning.     (60%)
•    Use pre-test scores to develop targeted instruction and create individualized student learning plans; prepare students for post-testing.     (20%)
•    Conduct and coordinate student assessment, including administering, reviewing, and documenting post-test and practice test scores.     (5%)
•    Promote adult education programs throughout the service delivery area.    (5%)
•    Maintain appropriate attendance and assessment records and submit required data daily.  Evaluate and document students’ ongoing progress toward goals and objectives in the Adult Education database.    (5%)
•    Participate in staff development activities.    (5%)

This job operates in a professional environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment and technologies.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear.  The employee must occasionally lift or move office products and supplies, up to 25 pounds.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a part-time teaching position.  Weekly hours will range from 13 to 19, dependent upon instructional time, planning, professional development, and student needs.  
Travel:
Travel to other campuses is a possibility for meetings, trainings, professional development, etc.…

Required Education and Experience:
•    Bachelor’s degree 
*and* 
•    Two (2) years related work experience
Note: Experience may substitute for the degree on a year-for-year basis

Preferred Education and Experience: 
•    Bachelor’s degree; 
•    Minimum three (3) years’ experience in education, or
related field;
•    Teaching Experience in middle, secondary or adult Level in math and reading;
•    Strong computer, communication, and interpersonal skills;

Location and Hours of Instruction
We are seeking a part time morning instructor for the Carrollton campus, with a scheduled class time of 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The instructor will teach two to four classes per week, based on student enrollment and program needs.

Rate of Pay
$22 per hour – no benefits.  Grant funded.
