OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

The mission of the Georgia Department of Public Safety is to work cooperatively with all levels of government to provide a safe environment for residents and visitors to our state. Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. JOB SUMMARY: Under direct supervision, serves as an entry level engineer performing introductory engineering assignments. Provides engineering assistance developing project plans, designs, or traffic engineering studies and other related documents, field experience with traffic signals and ITS hardware, cost estimates and other engineering technical reports for transportation projects.

POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES: Under general supervision, performs entry level engineering analysis, design, plan, review and inspection for work of moderate difficulty. Trainee participates in a formal training program to become proficient in the operational and organizational functions and structure of the Department. Job requires application of professional engineering concepts, principles, practices and methods sufficient to perform a broad range of engineering activities in a variety of work environments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The selected candidate must meet the advertised minimum qualifications to include State Entry Qualifications as well as the Agency Specific Qualifications

STATE ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Bachelor's degree in engineering from an A.B.E.T. accredited program OR equivalent degree in a related field OR Valid State of Georgia Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification OR Professional Engineer (PE) license issued by the State of Georgia

For applicants with an international degree:

·         Applicants with a bachelor's degree from an international institution must submit a course-by-course evaluation from a GDOT-approved credentialing provider. 

 

AGENCY SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with others in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to reason and make sound, well-informed decisions.
  • Ability to apply innovative solutions in solving problems.
  • Ability to research, gather and organize information into a presentable understandable format.
  • Displays high standards of ethical conduct and understands the impact of violating these standards on an organization, self and others.

AGENCY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  •  Possesses certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT).
  •  Demonstrated experience in a transportation or civil engineering related environment.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL GDOT JOBS

The interview is just one part of the overall selection process and is not the only criteria used to make the final selection.  In addition to the interview, the final selection is based on the applicant’s work history and performance (documented in HR and/or Office files), PeopleSoft/employee status (i.e. rehire code), employee performance reviews, personnel file review (HR & Office Files), criminal background check, employment reference checks (including references and commendations from Managers and other relevant documentation) and, for supervisory positions, demonstrated leadership skills based on past and current work history will be considered.  

Good Employment Standing:

In accordance with the Interview and Selection Process (ISP), an applicant must have no active disciplinary actions to be in good employment standing.  Actions that may disqualify an applicant include letters of reprimand (active for 12 months after issuance date); suspension without pay or disciplinary demotion (active for 12 months from the effective date); Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) and Leave Restriction Plans (active until 12 months after the date of conclusion).  In addition, an employee must have an overall ePerformance rating score of three (3) or higher on their most current evaluation.  Please note that Memorandums of Concern are not considered disqualifying factors.  Human Resources may remove any employee from consideration for selection who is pending a disciplinary action; however, if the action is resolved in the employee’s favor, he or she will be allowed to compete.
