OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

The mission of the Georgia Department of Public Safety is to work cooperatively with all levels of government to provide a safe environment for residents and visitors to our state. Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. Position Description: Under general supervision of a Senior Structural Engineer, the Structural Engineer evaluates and reviews designs, drawings, and specifications for new buildings/structures and for renovation projects. Serves a point of contact for construction projects for applicable state building codes, local and federal laws. This position also performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

·          Completion of an undergraduate degree in the discipline Civil Engineering with a Structural emphasis from an accredited college or university AND four (4) years of experience in structural design, construction document preparation and review, building/fire codes analysis and implementation and/or construction administration

·          Must have an active Structural Engineer License as a Structural Engineer in the State of Georgia; OR, if Professional Engineer License in Structural Engineering is currently active in another state, it must be active in the State of Georgia within one (1) if date of hire. 

·          Must have valid driver’s license and the ability to travel statewide.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess the following:

·          Plan review experience for a local municipality or state government.

·          Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering

·          Experience coordinating professional engineering staff

 

Job Competencies

   Ability to understand and support the purpose of the business unit-to provide value to projects by thoroughly and timely performing code compliance and constructability reviews.

   Ability to independently reviews complex projects in an expedient manner.

   Ability to work successfully with Design Professionals, contractors, end users, State Agency personnel, GSFIC staff and other project stakeholders to resolve comments and issues on projects in order to meet schedule, budget and quality requirements of projects.

   Ability to communicate negative information in a way that is positively received and understood problem solving skills that inspire trust and confidence through professional competence.

   Ability and willingness to listen, consider, and respond to other valid ideas and solutions to complex problems.

   Understands and has the ability to consider multiple satisfactory ways to solve problems.

   Ability to recognize and appropriately respond to differing levels of competence and experience in project teams and adapt accordingly.

   Knowledge of building construction documents.

   Knowledge of construction techniques, means, and methods.

   Knowledge of Georgia State Minimum Standard Codes

   Strong written and verbal skills

   Strong analytical skills and ability to read and interpret contracts, construction documents, Building and Life Safety Codes.

   Understanding of relevant codes and laws.

   Strong leadership skills, take initiative, and identifies solutions to complex problems.

   Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite

   Ability to review or produce construction documents in Revit or other BIM applications.

   Ability to mentor Architects or Engineers.
