OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) employs approximately 1600 employees and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Capitol Police and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD). GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on the state's roads. Capitol Police officers prevent and detect criminal acts and enforce traffic regulations throughout Capitol Hill. MCCD officers conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and inspect highway shipments of hazardous materials.

The mission of the Georgia Department of Public Safety is to work cooperatively with all levels of government to provide a safe environment for residents and visitors to our state. Although focused primarily on the enforcement of traffic laws and investigation of traffic crashes, the Department of Public Safety will support the efforts of all public safety agencies to reduce crime, apprehend those who commit them, and respond to natural and manmade disasters. JOB SUMMARY: Under direct supervision, provides entry level technical support in one or more of the following areas: OMAT, maintenance, construction, intermodal, planning, utilities, surveying, environmental or traffic.

 

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES: Under general supervision learns to assist in a variety of transportation engineering services. Trains to specialize in a particular area of emphasis within the area of assignment which may include working in both indoor and/or field setting.   This is the entry/training level of the Engineering/Technology job series.   Incumbents at this level may require additional training or experience to gain full proficiency in some or all of the job responsibilities.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The selected candidate must meet the advertised minimum qualifications to include State Entry Qualifications as well as Agency Specific Minimum Qualifications.

 

 

STATE ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

          High school diploma or GED

 

AGENCY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to learn to perform routine engineering support duties for assigned program area (i.e. construction, surveying, traffic operations, lab testing or data collection) 
  • Ability to interpret manuals and instructions.
  • Ability to learn to operate equipment and/or instruments as required 
  • Ability to assist in data gathering or collect data as requested   
  • Ability to lift 50lbs.
  • Ability to walk 5 or more miles on uneven terrain.
  • Demonstrates basic math skills (percentages, area of a triangle, trapezoid or circle, volume of a cylinder, rectangular prism, and unit conversions). 
  • Commitment to providing quality customer service        

 

 

 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL GDOT JOBS

The interview is just one part of the overall selection process and is not the only criteria used to make the final selection.  In addition to the interview, the final selection is based on the applicant’s work history and performance (documented in HR and/or Office files), PeopleSoft/employee status (i.e. rehire code), employee performance reviews, personnel file review (HR & Office Files), criminal background check, employment reference checks (including references and commendations from Managers and other relevant documentation) and, for supervisory positions, demonstrated leadership skills based on past and current work history will be considered.  

 

Good Employment Standing:

In accordance with the Interview and Selection Process (ISP), an applicant must have no active disciplinary actions to be in good employment standing.  Actions that may disqualify an applicant include letters of reprimand (active for 12 months after issuance date); suspension without pay or disciplinary demotion (active for 12 months from the effective date); Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) and Leave Restriction Plans (active until 12 months after the date of conclusion).  In addition, an employee must have an overall ePerformance rating score of three (3) or higher on their most current evaluation.  Please note that Memorandums of Concern are not considered disqualifying factors.  Human Resources may remove any employee from consideration for selection who is pending a disciplinary action; however, if the action is resolved in the employee’s favor, he or she will be allowed to compete.
